Peru is as colorful as it gets. It can be compared to the rainbow-colored Inca Empire flag, which is still used—mainly in Cusco—to represent the Quechua language and culture. This diverse cultural heritage is evident throughout Peru, including in Arequipa.

Rather than showcasing historic architecture, Arequipa is better known for its unique local culture and diverse people. Begin your journey from Puno to Arequipa and explore one of Peru’s most unique cities! The ride from Puno to Arequipa is filled with scenic views—as you leave the shores of Lake Titicaca behind, you will see stunning Andean mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and, if you are lucky and the weather conditions work in your favor, the snow-capped Misti Volcano. As you can tell, your adventure starts long before you reach Arequipa! With Daytrip’s private car service, you can also opt for sightseeing along the way. There are two main stops you can choose from—the Sillustani tombs and the town of Lampa, known for its pink-hued architecture.

About Arequipa

You might be wondering why Arequipa is considered one of the most unique cities in Peru, one of the only countries in the world that has it all—ocean, mountains, desert, rainforests, and even glaciers. Located halfway between Lake Titicaca and the Pacific, Arequipa claims a scenic mountain backdrop of Peru’s five biomes. Arequipa is also known as the White City, and most of the buildings are constructed using volcanic stones called sillar.

### A brief history of Arequipa Although there is evidence that the indigenous group Aymara inhabited Arequipa 1,000 years before the Incas, Incan cultural influence has become more evident today. Nevertheless, the name 'Arequipa' is believed to have origins in the Aymara language and culture, although the exact origins of the name are lost to history. In 1540, the Spanish conquistador Garcí Manuel de Carbajal founded the city. Unfortunately, in 1600, Arequipa was severely affected by a major earthquake and the eruption of the volcano Huaynaputina. The disaster devastated much of the city and swept away approximately 1,500 innocent lives. Although sillar stone was already used in construction, it was used more extensively after the earthquake, forming the city’s identity we know today. Arequipa was relatively isolated from the rest of Peru until the construction of the railway to the coast at Mollendo was finished in the 1870s. After that, the city flourished and slowly it became one of the most important cities in Peru.

From Puno to Arequipa: travel tips

While these tips are also applicable when visiting Puno, there are a few additional things that will ensure the only ups and downs of your trip from Puno to Arequipa will be the mountains in the backdrop:

### Bring layers Mornings are usually cold in Arequipa, while during the day it gradually gets warmer, so the key is to always layer. Bring long-sleeved jackets and sweaters, as well as short-sleeved shirts to wear underneath. It is also a good idea to bring a rain jacket if you travel during the wet season (from January to April). ### Don’t forget the sunscreen Although Puno is way higher in altitude compared to Arequipa (more than 7,500 ft or around 2280 m), it is a good idea to bring sunscreen, as the UV radiation increases at higher altitude. Make sure you also pack a hat and sunglasses. ### Plan enough time Arequipa offers a range of attractions and activities, so visitors often feel like they run short on time. To fully enjoy everything the city and its surroundings have to offer, consider booking your stay for at least three days.

How to get from Puno to Arequipa

There are no direct train or flight options for traveling from Puno to Arequipa. If you opt for a train, you would first need to travel to Cusco. However, no need to worry—there are three convenient Puno to Arequipa transfer methods you can choose from:

### From Puno to Arequipa by bus Traveling by bus is a budget-friendly option and a great way to experience local culture. And if you're not returning to Puno, you'll want to make sure you can return your rental to a different city! Things to do when you get to Arequipa

No matter how you choose to get from Puno to Arequipa, once you arrive, you will find plenty of things to do—from impressive architecture to delicious food, and welcoming locals. Here are three things that we think you should not miss on your trip to Arequipa:

### Explore the main square The Plaza de Armas of Arequipa is known as the most picturesque main square in Peru, featuring the majestic Cathedral and its portals, all constructed from white volcanic stone. Like the Cathedral, the square itself dates back to 1540. Take time to explore the impressive Cathedral, relax on one of the orange-red benches, enjoy the sight of pigeons around the fountain at the Plaza’s center, and spend some time people-watching. However, the latter is best done in the morning or evening, as there is limited shade during the day. ### Visit the home of the famous novelist Llosa Arequipa is famous for being the hometown of one of Latin America’s most famous writers, Mario Vargas Llosa, a Nobel Laureate. In honor of Llosa, a house museum has been opened in Arequipa, where visitors can explore the rooms and learn more about his work and life. The museum also recreates scenes from his books, so if you have read any of his masterpieces, the experience will be even more meaningful. ### Tour the Sillar Route The Sillar Route (La Ruta del Sillar) was established in 2014 to promote tourism in the area and educate visitors about the significance of sillar in the White City. The route stretches approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) and is located about a 30 to 40-minute drive from Arequipa. Along the way, you'll encounter impressive sillar rock formations, carvings, and sculptures. You can explore the route on your own or book a tour that includes pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation.
