Overview: car trip from Pompeii to Naples

After a long day of hiking Mt. Vesuvius and witnessing the ruins firsthand, it's time to head back from Pompeii to Naples. Going with a private driver or a shuttle bus are great options for those who value flexible schedules but would rather not drive in a foreign country.

Let Daytrip take the hassle out of planning around the train schedule and finding the best local experiences to see en route. With our shuttle buses, you can be back home within 30 minutes—perfect after a long day in the sun-baked ruins. You can also go with a private driver and customize your itinerary with other local stops, like the town of Positano, before heading home to Naples.

About Naples

Naples is a well-trodden trading point and one of the oldest cities in history. The first written accounts of Naples come from Ancient Greece around the 8th century BCE. Its strategic spot on the Tyrrhenian Sea made it an excellent port city for ships from around the ancient world.

Land routes across the Italian Peninsula also often led to Naples to transport goods to smaller cities like Pompeii. The roads from Pompeii to Naples today follow the same paths they did 2,000 years ago, except for perhaps the modern additions of the E45 Highway and the train tracks!

From Pompeii to Naples: travel tips

Your trip from Pompeii to Naples will go off without a hitch if you follow these travel tips!

### Take a shuttle bus Daily excursions to Pompeii from Naples are incredibly popular all year round. A shuttle bus is a great middle point for when you don’t want the full expense of a private driver, but still want the convenience that a public bus cannot provide. Go with an insured and trustworthy transportation company, like Daytrip, and ask about accommodations for children’s car seats or handicapped-accessible vans. ### Bring a phone battery pack The last thing you need is a dead phone with no map or camera in a foreign country, so make sure your adventure to Pompeii includes a charging cable and a battery pack. For added battery savings, turn off Bluetooth and internet connectivity when you don’t need it. ## How to get from Pompeii to Naples Travel from Pompeii to Naples your way on your schedule! Check out all your options and pick the best one for you and your family. ### Pompeii to Naples with a private driver A private driver can give you all the convenience of renting a car without the need to learn how to drive on Italian roads or update your driver’s license. Get picked up in Pompeii and head right back to Naples, or use this opportunity to tour Mt. Vesuvius and the Herculaneum Archaeological Area. A seat in a sedan that seats three starts at just $58 (€53). ### Pompeii to Naples by shuttle bus A shuttle bus is a great middle ground between taking a public bus and hiring a private driver. Daytrip shuttle buses can get you to and from Pompeii with fellow travelers at designated pick-up and drop-off points. With multiple departures throughout the day, you can pick the shuttle time slot that best fits your schedule. Unlike a public bus, shuttle buses do not have stops to make between Pompeii and Naples, so you can get where you want to go the fastest way possible. Did we mention air conditioning, too? Seats on the shuttle bus start at $10 (€9). ### Pompeii to Naples by train The EAV Circumvesuviana is a busy commuter train that passes through Pompeii on its way back to Naples. Tickets are $3.25 (€3), and advance tickets are not possible, so you risk standing room only for the entire 35-minute trip. It is also not air-conditioned. The Campania Express Line is an air-conditioned, tourist-oriented train service. Tickets start at $16.25 (€15). Beware, though, that there are only four departures daily, so you will have less flexibility in timing your return. ### Pompeii to Naples by public bus Flixbus operates the Pompei to Naples bus route; tickets start at $10.85 (€10). The trip takes about 35 minutes, and note that it leaves from the modern Pompei city, not ancient Pompeii.

Things to do when you get to Naples

Being Italy's third-largest city, Naples has endless entertainment options. Once you've driven from Pompeii to Naples and settled in, head out to explore these must-visit spots!

### Visit the National Archaeological Museum You’ll find a treasure trove of Greco-Roman artifacts, mosaics, and sculptures at the National Archaeological Museum. Don't miss the iconic Farnese Bull sculpture and the exhibits showcasing artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum, just in case you didn’t get enough on-site! ### Discover underground Naples What lurks far beneath Naples is as compelling as its above-ground attractions. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, Naples hides layers of history beneath its streets. Explore its intricate network of tunnels, catacombs, and caves to uncover sites like the Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea) and the Catacombs of San Gennaro, revealing the city's ancient aqueducts and burial grounds. ### Take a ferry to the Islands Prepare to set sail! Hop aboard a ferry from Naples' port to the enchanting islands of Capri, Ischia, or Procida for a day of fun in the sun. The islands are a short distance from the mainland, and each island has its own allure with panoramic sea views! (Don’t forget to pack a sunhat and water bottle, though!)

When is the best time to visit Naples

Like much of the Mediterranean region, the ideal times to visit Naples are during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is perfect for visiting archeological sites and enjoying a hot coffee on an Italian seaside promenade. Expect temps around 73°F (23°C). The ruins often do not have much shade, so consider visiting when the weather is clear but not overwhelmingly hot.

However, summer is also a popular time for beachgoers wanting to bask in the sun and refresh by the sea at one of the many islands that are accessible by ferry from Naples. Temperatures are quite warm at around 87°F (30.5°C). Figure out what your ideal Italian vacation is, and choose a season based on the activities you’d like to do.
