Ostuni is just eight kilometers (15 minutes by car) from beautiful Adriatic beaches. Marina di Ostuni offers several options, including family-friendly lidos with facilities and more secluded rocky coves. Torre Pozzelle and Pilone are popular choices for swimming.
Ostuni's historic center features steep, narrow cobblestone streets and many stairs, making it very challenging for wheelchairs and difficult for strollers. The lower town is more accessible. Consider tuk-tuk tours or staying in countryside masserie if mobility is a concern.
Masserie are fortified farmhouses dating from the 16th century, now converted into boutique hotels, restaurants, and B&Bs. Staying at a masseria offers a unique experience surrounded by olive groves and countryside, combining history with modern luxury and authentic Puglian hospitality.
Italy uses the euro (EUR). ATMs are available in Ostuni's lower town and near the main parking areas. While most restaurants and shops accept credit cards, smaller establishments and some hilltop cafes prefer cash, especially for purchases under 10 euros.
Italian is the official language. English is spoken in many hotels and restaurants catering to international visitors, but less commonly in smaller family-run establishments. Basic Italian phrases are helpful when shopping at local markets or visiting authentic trattorias.
Sample orecchiette pasta with cime di rapa, burrata cheese made fresh locally, and bombette (rolled meat). Puglia produces much of Italy's olive oil, so enjoy it generously. Seafood is excellent given Ostuni's proximity to the coast, especially grilled fish and octopus.
April through June and September through October offer ideal weather with warm days, comfortable evenings, and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and busy. Late spring provides a blooming countryside, while early fall offers warm sea temperatures and a harvest season atmosphere.
Ostuni's buildings are painted white with lime-based paint, a tradition started in the 17th century to combat plague by disinfecting surfaces. The practice continues today for aesthetic and tourism reasons, creating the distinctive gleaming appearance visible from miles away.
