We know that Amalfi, with its dramatic coastal beauty and friendly, relaxed atmosphere, is hard to say goodbye to. But the car trip to Sorrento on the other side of the Amalfi Coast, past pastel villages hugging steep cliffs over the Tyrrhenian Sea will be ingrained in your memory forever.
The Amalfi Coast Drive is one of the most scenic in the world and one of the most traveled in Italy. While you could ride a crowded public bus, suffering in the heat and being jostled by strangers, why would you? Instead, you can ride door-to-door in the comfort of a private car with Daytrip. And unlike the bus, you can stop for sightseeing at more beautiful towns, like Ravello and Positano, along the way
Although Sorrento is another coastal town – bigger than Amalfi – it's truly magnificent. With elegant gardens and streets, historic churches, delicious cuisine, a mild climate, and friendly residents, it's an Italian town you'll want to wander and get lost in.
About Sorrento
After your trip from Amalfi to Sorrento, you will enter a town that is a cultural, art, and history treasure trove. Perched atop cliffs overlooking the beautiful Bay of Naples, you can picture the town as a place where the streets are filled with the fresh and delectable scent of lemons, the markets bustle with people and curious local cuisines, and the nightlife is vibrant and inviting.
This Greek-founded town was a favorite holiday spot for the ancient Romans, who used Sorrento as a pivotal maritime hub for trade and seafaring. Over the years, as the town became more popular and its beauty remained undiminished, it drew in and continues to draw in thousands of visitors yearly.
And who can blame them? Sorrento perfectly captures the essence of Italian charm with much to see and do, including a swim in the inviting Tyrrhenian Sea and dining with a glass of local limoncello at the marina.
From Amalfi to Sorrento: travel tips
To ensure you have an enjoyable travel experience when driving from Amalfi to Sorrento, we've shared a few travel tips below:
Carry cash
Cash is king in Italy, especially in smaller towns. So carry cash on you, especially if you plan on visiting a few of the nearby small towns along the way to Sorrento. Trust us, when you have to pay to use a bathroom or buy lunch or a snack at a local restaurant you'll be thankful not to have to search for an ATM.
### Stop for sightseeing
The distance between Amalfi and Sorrento might not be too far for a day trip, but this doesn't mean there aren't many places to stop and sightsee. Add a bit of extra excitement to your trip by stopping and stretching your legs at Ravello while you take in the luscious gardens and sweeping coastal views. Or spot the nativity scene in the glowing Grotta dello Smeraldosea cave. When you travel by private car with Daytrip, you can do all of this and more!
### Plan enough time in town
It only takes about an hour to drive from Amalfi to Sorrento, considering the towns are less than 20 miles apart. Many people just use Sorrento as a transfer station on their way to and from the Amalfi Coast. But this ancient town has its own attractions that make it worth visiting. You'll need at least four to five hours in Sorrento (or more) to explore the main attractions, but a few days would be even better!
How to get from Amalfi to Sorrento
Amalfi is a small town, and so is Sorrento, so there are limited transportation options. We’ve listed your choices below to help you decide how to make the trip.
From Amalfi to Sorrento by bus
The cheapest and most popular way to get from Amalfi to Sorrento is by bus. Sita Sud bus runs the entire length of the Amalfi Coast, and there's usually a bus leaving every hour. Typically, the bus trip will take about an hour and 10 minutes, but this can be much longer when traffic starts backing up. You will be dropped off right in the center of town at the Circumvesuviana train station in Sorrento, which is perfect if you're going from Sorrento to Naples. Tickets are cheap and cost between $2 and $8 depending on when you travel, so check the timetable.
The biggest downside is that the buses are often incredibly crowded during peak summer travel. If the bus is passing Amalfi with a full bus, you might not get a seat and be required to stand most of the way. Or even worse, might not be able to get on at all.
### From Amalfi to Sorrento by ferry
From April to October, you can take a ferry from Amalfi to Sorrento for a fast but scenic option. There are not many ferries a day, so if you want to travel by ferry, you must adjust your trip schedule. To take the ferry, you must get to Marina Picolla, as this is the port from which the ferries and boats sail.
Unfortunately, even during April and October ferry trips can be canceled on short notice because of rough seas and weather, so keep this in mind. On average, a ferry trip from Amalfi to Sorrento costs about $17 to $28 one way and takes about an hour and 25 minutes.
### From Amalfi to Sorrento by private car transfer service
The most reliable, comfortable, and scenic way to travel from Amalfi to Sorrento is by a private car transfer with Daytrip. When you travel with Daytrip, you can expect an English-speaking local driver to meet you at your door and handle your luggage. You'll have complete control of your travel schedule instead of having to follow a bus or ferry timetable. A private car also means you'll enjoy a more comfortable ride than in a hot, crowded bus or bumpy ferry.
While you ride with Daytrip from Amalfi to Sorrento, you can chat with your driver to learn travel insights and tips and stop and sightsee at any of the magnificent locations along the way. It's also worth noting that a trip with Daytrip is affordable, especially if you're traveling with a group, with tickets starting at 27 euros per person.

When is the best time to visit Sorrento?

"We absolutely LOVED the trip! I wish I would have extra cash so I could have tipped him, but we had none on us; I felt HORRIBLE! If there is a way to do it, please let me know.
He was great. He did not speak a lot of English, but engaged as much as he could and he stopped to take scenic pictures without us even asking and was always at the pickups early (we were always early too). We did not expect any of that. We expected a drier to take us from each point and that was it.
We even needed you last minute when we didn't have a way back from Sorrento and had planned to just wing it and were just too tired and we called and you sent Raffaele back - we were so excited to see it was him when we got to the pick-up location.
I have told everyone about your company and will be mentioning it in my blog that I am going to write about our trip. We were very pleased and will definitely use you again, if the opportunity arises.

There are a few ways to get from Amalfi to Sorrento, but the most popular modes of transportation include bus, ferry, or Daytrip's private car service. Each transportation option has its own benefits and disadvantages, but Daytrip is the only door-to-door option and you can stop for sightseeing!
The ferry ride from Amalfi to Sorrento is typically one hour and 25 minutes long. However, this time can be increased based on the weather and the season. Ferries only run from April to October.
Taxis from Amalfi to Sorrento typically cost between $120 and $150. Daytrip's private car service offers superior service and an English-speaking driver for about the same price.
Sorrento is a larger and less crowded destination than Amalfi, which makes it better for some people to visit. Amalfi is the heart of the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast, so its main draw is the pastel houses and stunning natural landscape. Clifftop Sorrento is just outside the coast, larger, and not as popular. You'll find more to do, including limoncello tours, but it's not quite as dramatic.
