If you have a goal of seeing as many countries as you can, a visit from Madrid to Andorra will cross one of Europe’s six microstates off your list. Andorra is only 181 square miles (468 km²) and is right between Spain and France in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains.
Andorra is a landlocked microstate situated between France and Spain in the eastern Pyrenees mountains. Andorra has been known historically for its strategic location and political autonomy. Originally established as a feudal state in the 9th century, Andorra's governance evolved through a co-principality arrangement between Spain and France. This arrangement has shaped Andorra's political landscape, fostering a distinctive blend of French, Catalonian, and Spanish cultural influences.
To this day, Andorra retains its autonomy and is neither part of the European Union nor the Schengen zone. However, they do not issue passport stamps to visitors crossing the border unless you specifically ask for them. So, if it is important for you to have as many stamps as possible, be sure to ask the border guard!
Andorra attracts tourists for various reasons. The eastern Pyrenees mountains bring winter sports enthusiasts for skiing, hiking, and snowboarding. These gentle slopes are excellent for children and beginners, making Andorra a popular annual destination for families looking to spend their holiday in a ski resort.
Additionally, Andorra's status as a tax haven draws visitors who want to do some duty-free shopping while on vacation, particularly for luxury goods, electronics, alcohol, and cigarettes. Pas de la Casa and Andorra la Vella are the most popular shopping spots, but be aware that there are customs quotas on popular items like tea, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, and perfume.
The capital city, Andorra la Vella, has quaint but busy streets with a 360° backdrop of mountains. It is a natural first stop before seeing the rest of the country’s mountainous landscape and ski resorts.

Border agents do frequent checks of luggage leaving the country. When shopping, do not forget to keep your receipt and do not exceed the following amounts for popular goods:
As with most other countries, you must declare if you will enter the country with more than $10,000 (€9,211)in cash.
When looking for bus or train tickets, you may find appealing routes to get you from Madrid to Andorra within 5 hours with no transfers. These routes go to Andorra, Spain, a small town about 80 miles (130 km) from Zaragoza. These are certainly not the same place–so double-check!
Andorra is a tricky little place to get to since it does not have a train station or airport. Most bus and train routes between Madrid and Andorra require a transfer in Barcelona as well. Keep this in mind when booking your tickets, and when considering how heavy to make your luggage.
Traveling directly to Andorra by car is by far the easiest way to get to this microstate. The drive takes 6.5 hours, and you won’t have to worry about catching the next bus or hauling your luggage to another part of the station.

The simplest way to get to Andorra by bus or train is to go first to Barcelona and then transfer to a bus headed to Andorra la Vella. The total price will be between $80-$120 (€73.70-€110.50) and can take up to 12 hours. Remember that Andorra does not have a train station, so even if you take a train to Barcelona, you will take a bus for the second half of your journey.

The Pyrenees mountains in Andorra have a variety of slopes for all levels of skiing. This makes them a great destination for families or beginners looking for slopes that won’t be too intimidating but also won’t be a bore once you’ve mastered the beginner trails. Grandvalira and Vallnord are the two major resorts. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or just relaxing on the resort’s balcony while taking in the view of the mountains.
If you need to heat up after all that outdoor skiing, head to Caldea to relax and rejuvenate. The Caldea Spa Complex is Europe's largest thermal spa complex, with thermal baths, saunas, jacuzzis, and various wellness treatments, all set against the backdrop of the Pyrenees.
Andorra's stunning natural landscapes aren’t just for the winter. Explore its extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails during the spring, summer, and autumn. The trails have a variety of difficulties, so even novice hikers can enjoy the outdoors.
For activities like zip-lining, tobogganing, and horse rides, visit Naturland, an adventure park located in the La Rabassa forest. Here you can do a variety of adrenaline-filled activities for all age groups. They have both summer and winter sports, so it is a popular spot year-round.
Did we mention duty-free shopping? Your wallet will enjoy tax-free shopping in Andorra la Vella, the capital city. There are plenty of shopping malls where you can find a wide range of goods at competitive prices. Just make sure you don’t exceed the tariff quotas—or your luggage’s weight limit!
Andorra is a popular year-round destination since duty-free shopping can be done any time of year, and the high altitude in the mountains keeps the summers mild—expect temps around 75°F (24°C). The Andorran countryside is especially photogenic in the spring as everything is blooming, but you can’t go wrong with a visit from Madrid to Andorra any time of the year.
