Cruise along the Costa del Sol by car. Nerja’s Balcony of Europe offers sweeping sea views, while Frigiliana’s Moorish old town begs to be explored with its whitewashed facades and narrow streets.
Expect 1 hour to Nerja, then 20 minutes to Frigiliana. A private driver from Motril ensures you experience both the clifftop resort town and whitewashed mountain village at your own pace.
Positioned at the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, Nerja boasts nearly 10 miles of powdery beaches, making it a popular destination for beachgoers and watersports. However, its historic town center still feels like a village. The Balcon de Europa is the natural focus of the town and the venue for fiestas. Built on a rocky outcrop, jutting into the sea, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the whole coast. Discover the Nerja caves which are home to the world’s largest column and the world’s oldest Neanderthal cave paintings. The recent discovery of Roman pottery, Moorish coins, and the presence of an unusual biodiversity have all confirmed that discoveries in the Nerja Caves are seemingly limitless and subject to incredible global speculation.

Frigiliana was inhabited by the Moors both before and after the Reconquest, and its historic old quarter was built in their distinctive ‘Mudejar’ style. The maze of narrow cobbled streets in the old part of town wind uphill past impeccably kept white houses. A series of signs point you towards the town’s main landmarks, but the real attraction is just wandering through the town, soaking in the sights. Keep an eye out for the colorful ceramic mosaics that tell the story of the Moorish uprising, and the last battles fought against the Christians. The promenade leading up to the historic center is lined with a botanical garden, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy lunch or tapas with a view. If you’re looking for a souvenir, there are a wealth of craft shops offering everything from wool goods to chocolate to the only sugar cane syrup produced in Europe.
