Main attractions
- The old village (Dock) descends steeply from the clifftop to the shore through a tight network of passages, staircases and alleyways originally designed for moving contraband — every building connects to the next by hidden doors and tunnels; the village was one of the most active smuggling communities on the Yorkshire coast
- The rock scaur at low tide exposes fossil-rich geological strata of the Lower Jurassic period — ammonites, belemnites and plant fossils are regularly found; low tide is the defining time to visit
- The Coast to Coast walk ends here after 192 miles from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast — walkers traditionally dip their boots in the North Sea at the slipway
What to eat
- Fresh crab sandwiches and fish and chips at the Quarterdeck or the Fishing Boat Inn on the slipway — straightforward, well-sourced and entirely appropriate to the setting
Take note
- The old village involves steep, uneven lanes and steps — not suitable for those with significant mobility limitations; check tide times before visiting as the rock scaur and lower shore are only accessible at low tide
