关于您的行程

Deep in the lead-mining wilderness of Swaledale, Old Gang Smelting Mill provided the brooding industrial ruin at the heart of Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights. The 18th-century smelt mill sits in open moorland above Gunnerside — roofless, windswept and utterly uncompromising — exactly the landscape Emily Brontë imagined and Fennell captured on film.

Main attractions

  • The ruined smelt mill complex — founded in the 1700s and abandoned in the late 19th century — stretches across the moorside with its distinctive peat store, flue runs and chimney; one of the largest and best-preserved lead-smelting remains in England
  • The surrounding landscape featured extensively in Fennell's Wuthering Heights as the wild, elemental world surrounding Heathcliff and Catherine — the mill ruins stood in for the desolate industrial Gothic atmosphere central to the film's visual identity
  • The moorland walk from the Gunnerside Gill path to the mill (approximately 3km each way) passes through classic Dales scenery of drystone walls, shake holes and abandoned mine workings — the same terrain visible throughout the film

Things to do

  • Walk the gill path and locate the specific mill structures used as filming backdrops — the peat store archways and collapsed flue walls are the most recognisable on screen
  • Continue beyond the mill toward Level House Bridge for wider views across the Swaledale moorland that formed the film's wider landscape
  • The village of Gunnerside below offers a quieter, more sheltered base for the walk and gives context to the dale's lead-mining heritage

What to eat

  • The King's Head in Gunnerside is the closest traditional Dales pub to the site — simple food, real ale, and an interior that feels entirely unchanged; book ahead as it has limited covers

Take note

  • Old Gang is open moorland with no facilities, no signage, and no visitor infrastructure — wear waterproof boots and carry layers regardless of the forecast; Swaledale weather changes rapidly, and the exposed mill site offers no shelter. The track from Gunnerside is straightforward but can be boggy after rain. Mobile signal is unreliable throughout the valley.

Know more about your day trip

The most common approach is via the Gunnerside Gill path from the village of Gunnerside, approximately 3 miles (5 km) each way across open moorland. The terrain is uneven and can be very boggy after rain. Waterproof boots and warm, windproof layers are essential regardless of the morning weather forecast. The site has no facilities, visitor infrastructure, or mobile signal.
Old Gang Smelting Mill is about 55 miles (89 km) northwest of Leeds, roughly a 1 hour 15 minute drive through the Yorkshire Dales. The final stretch involves narrow valley roads through Swaledale, which your driver will handle while you take in the widening moorland scenery.
The mill is set on open moorland and is not accessible by vehicle. Reaching it requires the gill path walk from Gunnerside. For visitors who prefer not to hike, the Gunnerside village area and the lower gill scenery still capture much of the landscape character that appeared in the film, and are accessible with far less effort.
Yes. Old Gang Smelting Mill served as a central filming location in Emerald Fennell's 2025 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The roofless, windswept mill ruins provided the brooding industrial Gothic landscape that runs through the film. The peat store archways and collapsed flue walls are among the most recognizable structures on screen.
Old Gang Smelting Mill is one of the largest and best-preserved lead-smelting complexes in England. Founded in the 1700s and abandoned in the late 19th century, the ruined site includes a distinctive peat store, flue runs, and chimney spread across the open moorside above Gunnerside. It is a scheduled ancient monument and a remarkable record of the Yorkshire Dales' lead-mining era.
Late spring through early fall (May to October) offers the most reliable walking conditions and the longest daylight hours. Midsummer gives you the best chance of dry ground, though the moorland can still be wet after rain. Winter visits are possible but the exposed site and boggy paths make the experience much more demanding.
Waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable on the gill path, which holds water year-round. Bring wind- and waterproof outer layers, a map or downloaded offline route (mobile signal is absent on the moorland), water, snacks, and a camera. There are no shops or cafes at or near the mill site itself.
The King's Head in Gunnerside is the closest traditional Dales pub to the site, serving simple food and real ale in an interior that feels entirely unchanged from another era. It is a short walk from where the gill path begins. Covers are limited, so it is worth booking ahead if you plan to eat there.
