If you would like to make the most out of getting from Positano to Sorrento, book a private car with a local driver who would be happy to share their insights about the cities and the region to elevate your experience. Let them bring you door-to-door as you sit back and enjoy the ride!

About Sorrento

After your comfy car ride from Positano to Sorrento, you'll have left the Amalfi Coast but not the charming Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento lies on the southern end of the Bay of Naples and sits on the cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

![Sorrento](https://daytrip.imgix.net/Sorrento2.jpg]

Sorrento is a perfect destination to explore on the way from Positano to Naples or Rome. Like the towns along the famous Amalfi Drive that leave you speechless with their views, you'll still be able to enjoy the Mediterranean vibes in a smaller setting.

Despite being a tiny town, Sorrento is rich in history, dating back to the 8th century BC. It's still filled with old churches, monuments, and historic and artistic sites. From the Romanesque 15th-century cathedral to the Convent of San Francesco, from Museo Correale to the Church of the Santi Felice e Baccolo, you will find ancient history in every corner strolling around the town.

Picture Sorrento as the embodiment of yellow. Smell the fresh lemons, taste locally made limoncello, and relax on the golden beaches. This beautiful Italian town offers lots of history, relaxation, fresh drinks, and some time away from the hustle and bustle.

From Positano to Sorrento: Travel Tips

Traveling from Positano to Sorrento is part of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The trip offers a mix of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes. To ensure you make the most of this golden opportunity, make sure to follow these travel tips!

Consider when to travel

Sorrento may not be as busy as other cities dotted along the Amalfi coast. But it's still the gateway to the Amalfi Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, which sees 5 million annual visitors. As such, the roads and buses can be extremely crowded. Travel during the weekdays if possible, as even locals flock here on the weekends. Also, avoid rush hours from 6:30–10 a.m., 12:30–1:30 p.m., and 4:00–8:30 p.m. Otherwise, you could drastically increase the time of the journey.

Plan your stops

If you are getting from Positano to Sorrento by car, it means you are traveling along Amalfi Drive. And that means that you will pass through many viewpoints, historical sites, green scenery, and many more. Take advantage of your freedom by visiting Mount Vesuvius, Cantina del Vesuvio, Pompeii, or the Herculaneum Archaeological Area. If you're leaving Sorrento by bus or train you won't have another chance!

Pack essentials

The sun can be quite strong, especially if you're traveling in summer. Don’t forget to pack your sunglasses and sunscreen. And a hat would be a lifesaver.

Although the distance between Positano and Sorrento is only around 11 miles (18 km), considering the stops you may take, have some water and snacks with you. Fortunately, Daytrip drivers will always have a bottle of water for you and will be happy to stop at a roadside stand if you need a bite to eat.

How to Get from Positano to Sorrento

Because they’re relatively close, deciding how to get from Positano to Sorrento is easy! Just choose the travel option that best suits your needs!

From Positano to Sorrento by car

The Amalfi Coast has implemented limitations on rental cars based on license plate numbers, so you're limited to which days you can drive. The route is pretty straightforward: just follow the Amalfi Coast Drive until you reach Sorrento. The drive takes about 45 minutes without stops but can be much longer when there’s heavy traffic. If you are driving, be prepared for narrow roads and limited parking in Sorrento.

From Positano to Sorrento by bus

SITA Sud runs a public bus from Positano to Sorrento. This is the most economical way to travel, and you can get tickets at most newsstands. However, during the peak holiday season, the buses can get quite crowded, and buying a ticket doesn't guarantee you a seat. Since you might not be by the window, you risk missing out on the scenic views. You'll also miss out on sightseeing, and have to put up with being jostled on a crowded bus.

From Positano to Sorrento by ferry

From spring to early autumn you can take a ferry from Positano to Sorrento to enjoy views of the dramatic Amalfi Coast from the water. There are four different ferry services operating daily and the average cost for a 20-minute ferry ride is around 45 euros. While this is the fastest way to get from Positano to Sorrento, ferry services are subject to sea conditions, so always check the schedules. On days when the ferry is runny but there are still waves, expect a bumpy ride.

From Positano to Sorrento with Daytrip

Riding door-to-door with Daytrip’s private car service is the best way to travel from Positano to Sorrento if you're looking for comfort and convenience, and to make the most of your time on the Amalfi Coast. In the summer, you don't have to worry about sitting in an overcrowded bus in 87°F weather. You also avoid the headache of dragging suitcases, sitting on uncomfortable bus seats, and public transport strikes. To make things even better, you can customize your itinerary to do some sightseeing at some of the region's most unforgettable places, including Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius.

Things to Do When You Get to Sorrento

After your trip from Positano, you’ll want to fill your time taking advantage of all the things to do when you get to Sorrento. From taking in the view from the cliff tops to seeing how limoncello is made, you’ll be immersed in the culture of southern Italy.

Hang out around Piazza Tasso

Sorrento has nearly 3000 years of history, and the Piazza Tasso lies at its very heart. This busy square is filled with colorful shops and cafes and is surrounded by lemon gardens. After recharging with an espresso, you can set off to see Sorrento’s historic monuments like the Bell Tower, the Convent of San Francesco, Museo Correale, and the Church of the Santi Felice e Baccolo. Or hop on a carriage ride to the beautiful Marina.

Hit the beach

Days in Sorrento are for having long mornings and afternoons lazing by the sea, lying on the golden sand, and swimming endlessly. Sorrento has a variety of beaches to choose from, depending on whether you like it crowded and alive or calmer. No matter what, don't miss Bagni Regina Giovanna, a natural swimming hole located next to the ruins of a Roman villa.

Savor the local flavors

Sorrento is famous for its farms, lemon gardens, and local specialties. There are multiple limoncello factories around town that you can tour to see how the refreshing liqueur is made. Or take advantage of the sea's bounty with linguine allo scoglio - a pasta paired with the freshest seafood and shellfish available. Then there's Sorrento's signature dish: gnocchi alla sorrentina. It's a simple dish of baked gnocchi with tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella, and parmesan, but the flavors from the fresh local ingredients will keep you coming back for more.
