The Sedlec Ossuary is famous for displaying one of the world’s largest “memento mori” artworks (a reminder of death). The small chapel features decoratively arranged bones from tens of thousands of people, the result of its cemetery becoming overcrowded in the 16th century. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ossuary features an array of decorative bone structures, and even a bone chandelier that contains one or more of every bone in the human body. The chapel is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the summer, and closes an hour earlier in the winter. Tickets are available online in advance: http://www.ossuary.eu/

Know more about your day trip

This depends on the child's sensitivity to death-related imagery and gothic themes. The Sedlec Ossuary displays real human remains arranged artistically, which some children might find disturbing while others find fascinating from historical and artistic perspectives. Karlstejn Castle's spooky folklore and dark stone interiors might frighten younger children. Parents should consider their children's maturity levels and interests before including them on this particular spooky-themed day trip.
Photography policies vary. Generally, the Sedlec Ossuary does not permit photography. Karlstejn Castle restricts photography in certain areas, particularly rooms housing valuable artifacts and crown jewels. Check current policies when booking tickets, as they may change. Exterior photography is typically permitted at both sites, with Karlstejn's dramatic hilltop setting offering excellent photo opportunities of the castle architecture and surrounding countryside.
Both sites require advance booking. The Sedlec Ossuary offers tickets through their official website. Karlstejn Castle requires online reservations where you select specific tour options. Opening hours vary seasonally for Karlstejn, with the castle closing Mondays. The ossuary opens 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in summer, closing an hour earlier in winter. Advance planning ensures guaranteed access and preferred tour times for both locations.
The itinerary allocates 2 hours at each site, allowing thorough exploration without rushing. The Sedlec Ossuary, though physically small, warrants time for absorbing the intricate bone arrangements and reflecting on the memento mori concept. Karlstejn Castle's two-hour allocation accommodates guided tours through royal residence and chapel areas, castle grounds exploration, and time to appreciate the medieval architecture and commanding hilltop position.
While historically separate, both sites share Czech Gothic heritage and connections to mortality and spirituality. The Sedlec Ossuary directly confronts death through its bone arrangements. Karlstejn Castle, originally built to house sacred relics and crown jewels, carries spiritual significance mixed with its haunted reputation. Together, they represent different aspects of medieval Czech culture's relationship with death, spirituality, and the supernatural.
The complete round trip takes approximately 7 hours 15 minutes, covering roughly 200 kilometers total. Sedlec Ossuary sits about 80 kilometers east of Prague near Kutna Hora. Karlstejn Castle lies approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Prague, creating an efficient triangle route. This routing minimizes redundant driving while maximizing exploration time at both spooky destinations. The comfortable journey allows you to discuss the day's eerie discoveries while returning to Prague.
The Sedlec Ossuary contains one of the world's largest memento mori artworks, featuring decorative arrangements made from approximately 40,000 human skeletons. This small chapel addresses overcrowding from its 16th-century cemetery by artistically arranging bones into chandeliers, coats of arms, and architectural decorations. The bone chandelier allegedly contains one of every bone in the human body.
Beyond its stunning 14th-century architecture and Czech crown jewels, Karlstejn Castle features dark folklore and supernatural legends. Local tales include stories about tormented spirits, particularly Bloody Katerina, and other mysterious phenomena associated with the castle's history. Tours explore these legends alongside architectural and historical elements, revealing darker periods in the castle's past.
