Czechia’s Gothic jewel, Karlstejn Castle, crowns forested hills with royal secrets and panoramic Berounka views.
Karlstejn Castle rises dramatically above the Berounka River, its turrets once shielding the Imperial Regalia of Charles IV. Just 40 km from Prague, it’s a quick escape into medieval majesty. Explore the sacred Chapel of the Holy Cross (reservation required), stroll through royal chambers, and admire views from the castle ramparts. The walk up is car-free and scenic, lined with shops selling mead and wooden toys. Hike forest trails weaving through limestone cliffs, or rent a bike and follow the Berounka valley. The nearby village offers Czech pubs and artisan stalls perfect for a post-castle rest before heading back to Prague.

Explore a hidden Gothic stronghold deep in the Bohemian forest, where kings hunted and legends still echo.
Krivoklat Castle, nestled in the lush Krivoklatsko Forest, dates back to the 12th century and served as a royal retreat, hunting lodge, and prison. Less touristy than Karlstejn, it feels like stepping into a Czech fairy tale. Inside, visit the vast Gothic chapel, medieval library, and infamous prison tower with its torture chamber. Climb the Great Tower for panoramic views over dense woodlands crisscrossed by hiking trails. The surrounding protected landscape area is ideal for nature walks or picnicking beneath towering pines. Often featured in Czech films, the castle’s atmospheric courtyards and battlements invite slow exploration and a true medieval escape.
