Windermere is well connected by train from London (approximately 3 hours via Manchester or Oxenholme), Manchester (around 1.5 hours), and Edinburgh (around 2.5 hours). Oxenholme is the main interchange on the West Coast Main Line, with a branch line running directly into Windermere town. By car, the town is roughly 3 hours from London and under an hour from Manchester.
Windermere town and the waterfront areas of Bowness-on-Windermere have reasonably accessible paths along the lakeshore, and many of the local attractions, including Brockhole Visitor Centre, have good wheelchair and stroller access. However, some of the hiking trails and fell paths in the surrounding area are rugged and not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. It is worth checking specific venues in advance.
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory in the UK. In restaurants, it is common to leave around 10 to 15 percent for good service, though some establishments add a service charge to the bill automatically. Tipping taxi drivers by rounding up the fare is a common practice. In pubs, tipping is less expected but you can offer to buy the bartender a drink as a gesture of appreciation.
Lake Windermere itself is the centerpiece, with boat cruises, kayaking, paddleboarding, and rowing all popular on the water. On land, top highlights include the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere, the Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories, the Arts and Crafts house at Blackwell, and the short but rewarding hike up Orrest Head for panoramic lake views. The surrounding villages of Ambleside, Grasmere, and Hawkshead are all worth exploring.
The United Kingdom uses the pound sterling. Cards are widely accepted throughout Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere, and surrounding villages. Some smaller cafes, markets, and parking areas may still prefer cash, so it is handy to carry some. There are ATMs available in the main town center and in Bowness.
Windermere can be visited year-round, but late spring and summer (May through August) offer the most reliably pleasant weather, with the warmest temperatures and the longest days. July and August are the busiest months. Autumn brings stunning foliage and fewer crowds, making it a beautiful and peaceful time to visit. Winter can be cold and wet but has a quiet charm of its own.
The Lake District is famously changeable in terms of weather, even in summer. Layers are essential, and a waterproof jacket is a must at any time of year. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is important if you plan to walk any of the fell paths or lakeside trails. For lake activities, bring or hire the appropriate gear depending on the season.
The Lake District has its own beloved food traditions. Look out for Cumberland sausage, a locally produced pork sausage with a long heritage, as well as sticky toffee pudding, Grasmere gingerbread, and Kendal mint cake. Local pubs and tearooms throughout the area serve hearty, comforting food that suits the outdoor character of the region. A cream tea with scones, clotted cream, and jam is a classic treat.
