Lobsterfest in July is Placencia's most celebrated annual event, drawing visitors for seafood feasts, live music, and beach parties marking the opening of lobster season. An Arts Festival in February showcases local and national artists along the famous sidewalk. The village's relaxed vibe and small size mean that even outside of festivals, there is always a warm, community atmosphere to enjoy.
The village center is walkable and the iconic Placencia Sidewalk is best explored on foot. Golf carts are the most popular way to travel along the longer stretches of the peninsula and are available to rent. Note that the road has numerous speed bumps, so factor in extra travel time. Bicycles are another fun option for getting around at a relaxed pace.
Snorkeling and diving at the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the Northern Hemisphere, is the main draw. Laughing Bird Caye National Park offers stunning island scenery, and Gladden Spit is famous for diving. On land, the Monkey River tour for spotting howler monkeys, a visit to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, and exploring nearby Mayan ruins make for unforgettable experiences.
Belize uses the Belizean dollar (BZD), which is fixed at a rate of 2 BZD to 1 USD. US dollars are widely accepted across Placencia in restaurants, shops, and resorts, making it very convenient for American travelers. Change may be returned in Belizean dollars. ATMs are available in the village, though it is wise to carry some cash for smaller vendors and tours.
English is the official language of Belize, making it one of the most accessible destinations in Central America for English-speaking visitors. You will also hear Kriol (Belizean Creole), a lively local language, as well as Garifuna and Spanish in parts of the country. Communication in Placencia is easy and straightforward for most international travelers.
Rice and beans with stewed chicken is Belize's beloved national dish, always served with fried plantains. Fresh seafood is a daily staple: look out for grilled fish, lobster, shrimp, and conch ceviche. Belizean tamales and locally made chocolate, produced using cacao from southern Belize, are other local specialties not to be missed.
Placencia is excellent for wildlife encounters. Manatees live in the lagoon, and dolphin sightings are common at sea. Boat tours up the Monkey River offer close-up views of howler monkeys, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. The nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the world's first jaguar preserve, and scarlet macaws can be spotted at Red Bank village seasonally.
The dry season from November to May is generally the best time to visit, with sunny skies and calmer seas ideal for beach days and water activities. June through October brings more rain and occasional tropical storms, but the crowds thin out and prices drop. Whale shark season around the full moons in April, May, and June draws divers hoping for a rare encounter.
