Overview: car trip from Naples to Praiano

Once you’ve experienced the loud, proud Italian city of Naples, it is time to take a trip down the coast for the quiet, small-town Italian experience. Praiano is a great destination for Amalfi Coast views and luxury with fewer crowds and more secluded waterfronts. Getting from Naples to Praiano by public transport requires transferring in Sorrento. Not having to do that will make you appreciate Daytrip's door-to-door car service even more!

From Naples, the road will take you around Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii, perfect sightseeing stops for a dose of Italian history and culture! And if you want to stop for lunch, the Cantina del Vesuvio has great food and even better wine. Once you near Sorrento, you'll cut across the peninsula along the world-famous Amalfi Coast Drive before you're dropped off at your accommodation in Praiano. The total distance for this trip is 44 miles (70 km) and takes about 90 minutes.

About Praiano

Praiano is one of the quiet fishing villages on the Amalfi Coast that was a summer residence for the Doges of the Republic of Amalfi. It dates back to the 10th century and is dotted with Renaissance churches and palaces. Unlike its more popular neighbors like Positano and Amalfi, Praiano has more options for secluded beaches and private family vacations.

Praiano’s name comes from the Latin "Pelagianum," or "open sea," reflecting its spot on the Amalfi Coast. People come to Praiano for its serene beaches, panoramic views of the sea, and the small-town Italian experience.

Nature lovers come to Praiano for hiking, boating, and diving. It has great hiking trails for outdoor adventurers of all skill levels. The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is a popular trail that rewards all of your hiking with stunning views of the coastline. Boat tours can take you out on the water to sea caves and grottos that can only be reached from the sea.

Whether you come to Praiano to relax on its quiet beaches, take a hike, or bond as a family, you’ll find just what you’re looking for in this understated town on the Amalfi Coast.

From Naples to Praiano: travel tips

Follow these travel tips to make sure you have everything you need for your drive from Naples to Praiano!

Bring appropriate water shoes

Many of the beaches in Italy have rocky and pebbled shores, so you will want to wear water shoes when entering and exiting the water. Instead of flip flops, bring water shoes with a strap that will stay on while you are in the water. Once you are back in your hotel, let the shoes dry completely overnight.

Keep a waterproof bag for valuables

Sand, water, and electronics don’t mix! Bring a waterproof bag for your phone, headphones, and wallet to protect your most important items. While you are in the water, have your valuables hidden from view.

Have cash on you

A lot of beachside cafes, kiosks, and stalls don’t accept cards, so have euros in small bills for your snacks and drinks.

How to get from Naples to Praiano

Any mass transit journey from Naples to Praiano requires transferring in Sorrento. Daytrip has two options for travelers who want to avoid transferring and navigating the Italian bus and rail system with luggage.

Naples to Praiano by shuttle bus

There are a few shuttle bus services offering trips from Naples Airport or Naples Central Station to Praiano. Between the two pickup locations, and usually a stop in Positano, they’re slower than a private car. And with tickets at around $50, they’re not cost-effective if you’re traveling solo or as a couple considering you can get a private sedan with Daytrip for as low as $164.

Naples to Praiano with Daytrip’s private car service

Daytrip's private car service is the best way to get from Naples to Praiano if you care about speed, comfort, and convenience. Your driver will pick you up from anywhere you want in Naples and take you to your accommodation in Praiano. Along the way, you have the option to add excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Herculaneum Archaeological Area or Pompeii. And if you don't want to enrich your trip, you can be in Praiano in as little as 90 minutes!

Naples to Praiano by bus

If you are traveling from the Naples Airport (NAP), you can take the Curreri Viaggi shuttle bus to Sorrento for about 10 euros. It departs every 2 hours from the P1 parking area at NAP from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM every day (except for New Year and Christmas, so check ahead of time!)

After the hour-long (ish) trip to Sorrento, you have to change to a Sita bus to Praiano for another 45-minute ride. These buses run several times a day, and during the peak travel season, they depart every 30 minutes. Tickets for this leg of your journey are about $11-$13 (10 to 12 euros), but the ticket doesn’t guarantee you a seat and is often full.

Once you get to the Praiano bus station, you may need a taxi to get to your final destination, whether that is your hotel or the beach.

Naples to Praiano by train and bus

We'll preface by saying there's no train station in Praiano, but taking the train from the Napoli Centrale train station to Sorrento is the best public transportation option. The Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento leaves about every 30 minutes throughout the day and tickets are about $3 (3 euros). The tickets can’t be bought ahead of time, so during the peak travel season or weekends, you may experience overcrowding or selling out. This part of the trip takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.

For about $8 (7 euros), you can take the Campania Express which is slightly faster and geared towards tourists. It has A/C, luggage storage, and most importantly, you can buy tickets online in advance to guarantee a seat. Once in Sorrento, you’ll need to take a Sita bus or a taxi to Praiano.

Naples to Praiano by ferry

While there are no direct ferries from Naples to Praiano, if you’d like to take a ferry from Naples to Sorrento, that is totally possible! The Alilauro Hydrofoil departs from the Moro Beverello Pier in Naples for just $14 (13.10 euros). Once you’re in Sorrento, you’ll need a taxi or bus to get to your final destination in Praiano.

Things to do when you get to Praiano

Most people make their trip from Naples to Praiano to relax on the many beaches and soak in the sun. In between daily sunbathing, check out these local attractions!

The Church of San Gennaro

The beautiful Church of San Gennaro was built in 1589 and is located in the heart of Praiano. It is known for its stunning tiled floor and breathtaking views of the sea. It is also a popular wedding venue, and it is easy to see why!

Hike the Sentiero degli Dei (The Path of the Gods)

The famous Path of the Gods hiking trail offers some of the most spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast. The trail can be accessed from Praiano and leads to Positano. It is fairly accessible to all skill levels, so it does get crowded. Start early in the day to beat the heat and the crowds. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes!

Torre a Mare

The Torre a Mare was built as a watchtower centuries ago to defend against pirates. Now it houses a modern art gallery that overlooks the sea. It’s a quirky little spot for history buffs and art lovers alike.

Take a Boat Tour

Explore the coastline and nearby islands by boat. Many tours offer stops for swimming, snorkeling, and visiting secluded beaches and grottos. Definitely visit the Grotta di Suppraiano, a sea cave that can only be reached by boat. The cave is known for its striking rock formations and crystal-clear water.

The Church of San Luca Evangelista

While not as well known as the Church of San Gennaro, the Church of San Luca Evangelista has a beautiful Baroque interior with marble accents and notable artworks that are worth checking out. It also offers a quiet place for reflection.

When is the best time to visit Praiano

If you like mild weather and less crowded shores, the best time to visit Praiano is between March and May or September and October. You’ll experience a much lower UV index and slightly lower accommodation prices. And since there aren't as many other people, you'll find it much easier to get around. If you plan to do any hikes, this is the time to visit Praiano.

The sunny Amalfi Coast is most popular during the summer. During this time of year, you’ll have more options for transportation and amenities, but it is also more crowded. In fact, you might find that things are sold out.
