The Heidelberg Castle Festival in summer features open-air theater and concerts in a stunning setting. The Christmas market runs through December and is one of the most charming in Germany. Germany also observes public holidays like German Unity Day (Oct. 3) and Christmas, when some businesses may be closed - plan accordingly.
Heidelberg is about one hour from Frankfurt by train and around 45 minutes from Stuttgart, making it a popular day trip destination. Frankfurt Airport has direct rail connections that put Heidelberg within easy reach for international arrivals. By car, the city is accessible via the A5 and A656 motorways. Private transfers are a convenient door-to-door option, especially when arriving with luggage.
Heidelberg is generally considered a very safe destination. It is a well-maintained university city with a large international student population. As with any popular destination, be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas, especially along Hauptstrasse during busy periods. The city is well-lit and active well into the evening.
The historic Old Town is very walkable, and most major attractions are within a short stroll of each other. The cobblestone streets and hilly terrain can be challenging for strollers and wheelchairs in some areas. A funicular (Bergbahn) runs up to the castle, which is a good option if you'd rather not tackle the uphill walk.
Heidelberg Castle is the city's crown jewel - a partly ruined Renaissance fortress with sweeping views over the Neckar River and Old Town. Other highlights include the Carl Theodor Old Bridge (Alte Brucke), Hauptstrasse (the pedestrian shopping street), the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche), and the scenic Philosopher's Walk (Philosophenweg) on the hillside opposite.
Germany uses the euro (EUR). Cash is still widely used throughout the country, including in many shops, restaurants, and smaller businesses in Heidelberg. It's a good idea to carry some euros with you, as not every local vendor accepts credit cards. ATMs are easy to find throughout the city.
Late spring (April through June) and early fall (September through October) offer the most pleasant weather - warm but not overly hot - along with fewer crowds than peak summer. Summer brings the famous Heidelberg Castle Festival with outdoor concerts. The Christmas market in December is also magical and worth a visit.
Heidelberg and the wider Baden-Wurttemberg region offer hearty German cuisine. Look out for Schnitzel, Bratwurst, pretzels, and Spaetzle (soft egg noodles). The region is also known for good wines, particularly from the nearby Palatinate wine region. Many traditional restaurants and beer gardens in the Old Town are great places to sample local dishes.
