Overview: car trip from Gubbio to Florence

With its stunning Piazza Grande and famous Roman ruins, it's no surprise that you've ended up in Gubbio. But after you've explored the ancient tales of the past and gazed upon the medieval buildings of legend, what's next? Why not a car trip from Gubbio to Florence?

A trip from Gubbio to Florence will take you past places like Montone with its cobbled lanes, the more than 1,000-year-old Pieve di San Pietro, and the charming village of Loro Ciuffenna. And when you're riding with Daytrip's private car service, you can actually visit them!

Each of these iconic places has a story to tell, and you can learn a little of it when you visit. Your private local English-speaking driver will pick you up in Gubbio, take you to these places—and more—should you so wish, and drop you off at your accommodation in Florence. Once you arrive in Florence, you can begin your adventure among the city's distinguished cultural scene, Renaissance architecture, and outstanding art. If you want to know more before you visit, consider chatting with your driver for the insider scoop!

About Florence

Florence is the capital of Italy's magnificent Tuscany region. Surrounded by gently rolling hills, villas, farmyards, and vineyards, everyone who visits Florence can attest to its intrinsic charm that amazes, seduces, and draws one in until they never want to leave.

Founded by the Romans in the 1st Century BCE, Florence quickly became one of the most wealthy cities, as evidenced by what is still standing hundreds of years later. A simple stroll through its streets and a quick look at its Renaissance-era architecture and monuments will show you why it used to be called "the Athens of the Middle Ages". And that wasn't even its peak! A few centuries later, Florence birthed the Renaissance, an era that bestowed the city with incomparable art and architecture, and earned its historic center recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With so many marvels to explore, you can start at any spot in the city and walk around, tasting, touching, seeing, and enjoying.

From Gubbio to Florence: travel tips

Travel tips can be handy, especially when traveling from Gubbio to Florence. So, if you're planning a trip from one city to the next, you might want to keep the tips we've shared close to heart.

Make restaurant bookings in advance

In Italy, the restaurants get busy, with some of the more popular ones filling their seats days in advance. That is why it's important to secure a table a few days to weeks before you visit any of the towns, villages, or cities along the way that you plan on stopping in to grab a bite to eat.

However, note that there are a few exceptions, with certain restaurants serving customers on a 'first come, first serve' basis. In this case, if you know a restaurant will be busy, leave earlier—which you can do with Daytrip—to ensure you get there ahead of the crowds. ### Validate public transportation tickets Public transportation isn't for the weak. Not only is traveling by bus or train from Gubbio to Florence often noisy, crowded, and uncomfortable, but it can also be a hassle. This is especially true if you must validate your bus or train ticket before beginning your journey. If you don't validate your tickets, you risk a hefty fine, which no one wants to deal with while traveling to Italy. ### Download maps in advance When traveling from Gubbio to Florence, you might not have access to the Internet or a strong data connection, so it's a good idea to download maps or directions in advance. If you're traveling with Daytrip, there's not much need for this since our drivers can get you where you need to be, but it could be handy if you're driving yourself or using public transportation.

How to get from Gubbio to Florence

Getting from Gubbio to Florence isn't as difficult as it might seem. Below, we've shared your transportation options for getting from one city to the next.

From Gubbio to Florence by bus

One of the most popular ways to travel from Gubbio to Florence is by bus. The buses are often the cheapest way to travel, but they are by no means the most comfortable. Not only will the trip take about four hours, but you'll also need to contend with a potentially crowded coach, few amenities, and one or more transfers.

If you want to take the bus, you must travel with Busitalia and change to Flixbus in Perugia to get the rest of the way. These trips often cost between $20 and $60, but not many buses leave Gubbio for Florence daily, so you'll also be limited in the times you can travel. ### From Gubbio to Florence by train Unfortunately, there is no direct train from Gubbio to Florence, and you cannot book a train ride from Gubbio. If you want to travel by train, you must take a bus from Gubbio to Perugia and then a train from Perugia to Florence. Taking a bus and then a train can be a hassle and incredibly frustrating. Not to mention there are not too many trains daily and the trip can take four and a half hours with transfers. The trip can also be incredibly expensive, with the total price reaching upwards of $70. ### From Gubbio to Florence by private car transfer Getting from Gubbio to Florence is uber easy if you drive with a private car service like Daytrip. Unlike public transportation, you can book your trip for exactly when you want to travel, get picked up at your accommodation in Gubbio, and add sightseeing stops along the way. Besides being convenient and reliable, Daytrip is also affordable, with prices starting at 75 euros per person. You can also trust that the cars are luxurious and well maintained and if you travel directly your trip will only take about two hours and 10 minutes—much faster than the bus and train!

Things to do when you get to Florence

As “The Birthplace of the Renaissance”, Florence has many attractions worth visiting, so it's understandable that choosing what to see and do can be difficult. That's why we've shared a few of the best things to do in Florence if you're planning a trip from Gubbio to Florence anytime soon.

Walk the Ponte Vecchio

Undoubtedly, Ponte Vecchio, or the “Old Bridge” as the locals refer to it, is the most recognized symbol of Florence—besides Brunelleschi's beautiful dome that tops the Duomo. As one of Florence's main attractions, it's worth visiting, especially considering it's lined with pocket-sized jewelry shops that you'll want to explore to pick up a souvenir or two. You'll find this 14th-century bridge spanning the Arno River between Pitti Palace and Palazzo Vecchio.

### Pitti Palace Surprise, surprise—Florence's largest museum complex is also a palace. The Pitti Palace, built in the 1400s, is a great spot to explore if you are interested in Florence's royal history. Up until the early 20th century, this palace was the official residence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. ### Florence Baptistery You can't visit Florence without touring its oldest building—the Florence Baptistery of St. John. This iconic octagonally structured building dates back to ancient Rome, but what's interesting is that its bronze doors are believed to be from the 16th century. Lorenzo Ghiberti sculpted them, so it's unsurprising that they are magnificent to look at and understand why Michelangelo dubbed them the 'Gates of Paradise.'

When is the best time to visit Florence?

Florence frequently tops travel lists, so, unsurprisingly, millions flock to the city every year. Yet when should you drive from Gubbio to Florence?

Although the answer to this question will largely depend on your travel needs and desires, we recommend visiting this spectacular city in the spring or fall, from April to June or September to October.

If you want to experience the city while enjoying the best weather, April to June are not overly hot, and you'll enjoy the peculiar flowers across the Tuscan countryside. However, if you want lower accommodation pricing, fewer crowds, and chillier (but not overly cold) weather, September and October are definitely worth considering.
