The drive from Playa del Carmen to the Tulum Airport traverses a distance of 65 miles (105 km) in around 1 hour and 40 minutes. With a Daytrip private car transfer, you can add fun sightseeing stops to your ride to catch any last Mexican sights you might have missed out on.
Consider visiting Cenote Chaak Tun, an incredible underground cenote encircled by ancient rock formations, where sunlight pours down through a natural skylight to the water below and onto a small island dotted with trees. Visitors can take a dip into the smaller above-ground cenotes and then take a guided tour of the subterranean marvel.
After you make your way from Playa del Carmen to the Tulum Airport, you will get to enjoy Mexico’s newest airport, completed in late 2023. Since the first flights in December, the Tulum airport has boomed in popularity for international travelers. The airport offers a range of direct flights between major airports in the US in particular, with nonstop services between cities like Charlotte, Miami, and Dallas.
The airport features a unique, sleek design with distinctive Mayan touches such as traditional art and jungle motifs. Travelers can look forward to lots of natural light, private nursing rooms, and limited free Wi-Fi access.
On your Playa del Carmen to the Tulum Airport transfer, there are a few things that can help you to have the most convenient and enjoyable journey possible.
If you choose a private driving transfer with Daytrip, you will have the exciting opportunity to add sightseeing stops to your airport transfer. This is a great chance to round out your tour of Mexico with one last adventure, while still enjoying swift transportation to the airport ahead of your departure.
Your friendly professional driver will work with you to customize your itinerary, building a travel day that is as fun as it is efficient. They will work with you to determine the best departure time for your transfer to ensure you make your flight with any sightseeing additions.
While the Tulum airport boasts an innovative design and a range of great flight connections, it is still a fairly new facility and some of the amenities for travelers are still in development. While your favorite name-brand fast foods are on their way to Tulum airport, for now, there are only a few options for travel snacks.
While there aren’t yet many eateries open for substantial meals, there are smaller coffee stands open and a convenience-store-style market in the duty-free area selling sandwiches and snack foods.
Travelers may be best off packing snacks or their own small meals (especially for kids or picky eaters) to fill any gaps in what’s available during your visit.
While the food options are still a work in progress, the duty-free shopping at Tulum is up and running. This is a great chance to pick up last-minute souvenirs like gourmet chocolate and coffee, and even some Mexican flavors of your favorite candy and snack food brands.
There are a few different transportation options for your trip from Playa del Carmen to Tulum Airport, which will be broken down in order of convenience.
The best option for many travelers is a private driving transfer from Playa del Carmen to the Tulum Airport. This option gives you seamless door-to-door transportation in 1 hour and 40 minutes, either directly to the airport or with added sightseeing adventures on the way.
You gain the peace of mind that comes with Daytrip’s 100% satisfaction guarantee. Flexible bookings mean you’ll have complete control over your itinerary. This comfortable, convenient transfer service starts at just $27 a seat. You will be paired with a friendly, professional driver eager to give you the best travel experience possible. From help with your luggage on either end of the journey to local insight into the area, your Daytrip driver will be there to elevate your transfer and close out your Mexican adventure with superb service.
The bus from Playa del Carmen to Tulum city center takes about 2 hours, and from there you’ll need to transfer to either a taxi or an on-demand shuttle to Tulum Airport as it is not yet possible to take a direct bus journey from Playa del Carmen. The bus only costs around $2-3, but keep in mind that the 30-minute ride with a taxi or private shuttle may greatly increase the cost of this trip.
The shuttle services from Playa del Carmen will get you as far as Pino Suarez. From there, you will need to find transportation for the final 11-minute journey to the airport (either with another on-demand shuttle or a taxi). Tickets for the shuttle journey cost on average $4-9, and the taxi ride to the airport will be an additional cost even if it is only a short distance to the airport.
After you complete your Playa del Carmen to Tulum Airport transfer, you can look forward to the sun-soaked terminal designs and Mayan art awaiting you in the airport. While dining options are limited as the airport has only recently opened, there are some prepared food stands and coffee stalls. The airport also features a unique tequila cocktail bar, for those who want to close out their journey in Mexico with some local flair.
The airport also offers two padded play areas for children on either side of the terminal. The airport’s heavily jungle-inspired design with wood and greenery elements makes it a calming place to wait for your departure.

Reasonably Priced and Safe Transportation
“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”
“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”
“Used the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.”
Comfortable and Safe Rides in Mexico
“Used Daytrip for two rides in Mexico, which were both great. So comfortable, and we arrived at each of our destinations at a great time. Both were incredible drivers, and we felt so safe. One of our drivers, Miguel, also played the best music! Will definitely use Daytrip on our next trip to Mexico.”
