Imagine yourself traveling through the heart of Greece, your private driver taking care of the route and you just enjoying the views passing you by. Your car trip from Athens to Nafplio will be more colorful and eventful when you take a door-to-door transfer with Daytrip.
You’ll leave the lovely blend of history, modernity, and hectic capital vibes back in Athens, and set on a bright blue journey to Nafplio, a town that preserves all things Mediterranean between its borders. Covering a distance of approximately 86 miles (140 km), the drive will take around two hours (not including all the nice stops you’re bound to make).
You'll pass the impressive Corinth Canal, where the Peloponnese meets mainland Greece, and continue into the countryside full of olive trees and vineyards. Your route is dotted with unmissable stops each of which will be a different glimpse into Greek history and culture. Make Castle of Acrocorinth your first stop. The castle was controlled by the Romans, Byzantines, Franks, and Turks before returning to the Greeks. It is considered to be the most impressive acropolis in the whole of Greece!
Continue to the ancient site Nemea. The place is known for the legend of the Nemean lion, which terrorized the locals until it was slayed by Heracles. Walk around the remains of a temple built for Zeus and used for hosting games, a bathhouse, and a hostelry. Add all the other stops you’d like to make into your itinerary to make a history-filled car tr
Traveling from Athens to Nafplio is one of the most favored trips to take in Greece thanks to Nafplio’s renowned landscapes, culture, and lively daily life. It is nestled in the Peloponnese region and served as the first capital of modern Greece after the Greek War of Independence in the early 19th century. Its unparalleled location on the Argolic Gulf was one of the main reasons it was set as the capital and now its views serve its locals and all visitors.
Nafplio’s architecture is a testament to its diverse past, influenced by the Venetians, Ottomans, and Byzantines. Once you are in the old town, you’ll be greeted by neoclassical mansions, wide squares, and historic buildings all around. On one of your walks, you’ll spot The Palamidi Castle on a hill above Nafplio. Pay a visit there for breathtaking views of the town and sea.
Nafplio is also renowned for its cultural scene, hosting numerous art galleries, museums, and festivals throughout the year. The Archaeological Museum and the War Museum provide insights into the region's ancient and more recent history. You’ll also be able to make Nafplio your base to explore some of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites such as Epidaurus, Mycenae, and Tiryns.
Nafplio's blend of warm hospitality, history, culture, and modernity make it an amazing destination for a glimpse into Greece's past and present.
Getting from Athens to Nafplio in the comfort of a private car means a trip enriched by the cultural and scenic beauty of Greece. Here are some tips to make sure you are prepared well for the trip and you have all you need.
Decide which stops you’d like to explore and add them to your trip. A recommended stop is at the Corinth Canal, a marvel of engineering and views. Further along, consider visiting the ancient ruins of Mycenae and Tiryns, both rich in history and culture.
Pack essentials such as sunblock, sunglasses, and comfortable clothing to accommodate the warm Greek climate. Bring along pillows for rest in the car, and prepare entertainment like playlists or audiobooks, especially if traveling with children. Regular breaks are essential for stretching and maintaining focus on the road.
Nafplio's charm is best explored on foot. The city's narrow, picturesque streets and historic landmarks, like the Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi Castle, are accessible and enjoyable without a car. If you want to venture further, consider renting bikes to explore the surrounding area.
There are several different ways to get from Athens to Nafplio, including driving, taking a bus, or train or booking a private car. Here are the options you can choose from:
Driving to Nafplio from Athens takes around two hours. The most common route is via the A8 and A7 motorways, passing through the Corinth Canal. You can explore at your own pace, and make stops along the way. Be prepared for toll roads along the way. Once you get to Nafplio, you'll find the narrow streets difficult to navigate and parking limited. And, you likely won't be using your car to get around town.
Getting to Nafplio by bus takes two to two and a half hours. KTEL buses run frequent services from Athens’ Kifissos Bus Station to Nafplio. Check KTEL Argolidas for recent schedules. It is a cost-effective and direct option, without the need for transfers. But it offers less flexibility, and you'll need to get to and from bus stations which adds extra time to your trip.
There is no direct train service from Athens to Nafplio. You can take a train to Corinth and then switch to a bus for the remainder of the journey. You would spend two hours on the train to Corinth, plus additional time for the bus transfer to Nafplio. Keep in mind that it requires a transfer and good timing. In general, it's better to just take the direct bus if you're on a budget.
Go for a door-to-door private car service for the calmest, most direct, and most convenient trip. Since you don't need to figure out public transportation, or even handle your own luggage, it's especially nice if you are traveling in a group, or with lots of bags.
Enjoy the tips your local driver gives you about Nafplio and about the stops you’ll take along the way as well as useful information about where to eat. And, unlike any of the other options, Daytrip's optional sightseeing stops give you the chance to experience even more of Greece!
After you get to Nafplio, you'll find history in every corner, fresh food at every turn, and culture wherever you look. Here is a list of some of the things you can enjoy during your stay:
Tour around the Venetian-built Palamidi Castle, which is perched atop a hill, for breathtaking views of Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf. The fortress is a testament to Nafplio's strategic historical importance. If you're not up for a challenging climb up its famous 999 steps, you can reach the top by car. Keep your camera ready for some pictures with the best possible backdrop.
Get to Bourtzi Castle by a short, scenic boat ride. This fortress once served as a prison and a defense point against invaders. Now, it is a perfect spot to stand and enjoy a moment of tranquility amongst the waves.
Nafplio's Old Town is an enchanting maze of narrow streets, neoclassical buildings, and hidden squares. Stroll the narrow streets and alleys, admire the well-preserved architecture, browse local boutiques, and feel the town's rich history come alive.
No visit to Nafplio would be complete without indulging in its great selection of Greek cuisine. Local tavernas serve up traditional Greek dishes, with fresh seafood being a highlight.
If you have a sweet tooth, the town's gelaterias have a delightful variety of flavors to enjoy as you wander. As a small tip, reserve your table at 3 Sixty for a grill and wine evening.
Visit Nafplio during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) months to experience the city at its best. During spring, Nafplio is filled with colorful flowers and refreshing breezes while fall means warm and windy weather with crowds withdrawing slowly.
During these times, you’ll also be enjoying local festivals and events thanks to which you’ll gain a deeper insight into the modern Greek culture and the traditions of the region. Avoiding the peak tourist season also means more accommodation options and better rates.

“Gonzalo from daytrip was our driver and he was absolutely amazing. He went over and beyond trying to locate us as our service wasn't so good on our phones. He patiently awaited our arrival to the lobby so he could take us from Tulum Dreams Resort to our other hotel in cancun an hour and a half away near the airport prior to our departure flight home. He was polite, respectful and kind. Made sure we were comfortable during our long ride. Fast and to the point. I recommend this company as finding a one way ride from Tulum to Cancun isn't easy or cheap and this company provides a great service for a great price. I will definitely be using them again whenever I'm in the Cancun/Tulum area. Thank you DayTrip and Gonzola.”
“We were picked up by Marianna to drive us from Heraklion to Chania. The weather was terrible & due to this Marianna arrived a few minutes late. She contacted me to advise of this. Marianna lives in Chana and she made our trip very interesting by informing us of local things to do and see in Chania. Marianna is a safe driver and we all felt comfortable with the speed she drove at and how good her driving was in heavy rain. She is a lovely person with fluent English. We highly recommend Daytrips and if you are in Heraklion or Chania please make sure you ask for Marianna.”
“Used the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.”
“We recently travelled from Nafplio to Athens airport. We decided to book my day trip and visit a few sites on the way. We were really happy that we did. The car trip was very comfortable and it was really good to have a chance for some sightseeing on the way.”
