After arriving in Chefchaouen, you'll have the freedom to explore the blue-painted medina before continuing on to Cascades d'Akchour, where you can enjoy the mountain waterfalls, all at your leisure. Meanwhile your driver will wait for you nearby, ensuring a stress-free return trip.
Chefchaouen was founded in the 15th century as a fortress to fend off the Portuguese invasion of Morocco. A century later, it welcomed Muslims and Jews from Andalusia who had to flee Spanish persecution during the Reconquest. At some point in the 20th century, the traditional buildings of the medina were painted a vibrant sky blue. One explanation for the decision is that blue keeps mosquitos away, while another theory is that it was introduced by Jews fleeing Hitler in the 1930s with the blue serving as a reminder of heaven and God’s power. The most cynical is that the decision was made in the 1970s simply to attract tourists. Regardless of the reason, the winding alleys and traditional buildings rendered in a brilliant blue are undeniably entrancing. Add to that the traditional handicrafts and cuisine not found elsewhere in the country and you’re in for an unforgettable experience, and countless photos if you ever need a reminder.

The Cascades d'Akchour aren’t just one or two waterfalls, but an entire valley of cascades and swimming holes. The hike brings you through a deep gorge filled with lush greenery and pools of blue water. Along the way, numerous smaller cascades feed into swimming holes where you can take a dip to cool off. Venturing along the river, higher into the mountains, you eventually reach the final, tallest fall which pours over a mossy rock face into a cold pool of water. In the valley you’ll also find some local restaurants, so after you’ve built up an appetite you can stop for some tajine. Please note: appropriate footwear is required, and this hike isn’t recommended for people with mobility issues.
