In the volcanic heart of Sao Miguel lies Furnas, a village where Earth’s power bubbles to the surface. Begin at Caldeiras das Furnas, where steaming fumaroles hiss from the ground. Next, unwind in the warm, mineral waters of Terra Nostra Park, surrounded by a 200-year-old botanical wonderland. Continue to Poca da Dona Beija, where you can soak in terraced thermal pools and give your body and soul a much-needed respite. Don’t forget to sample Cozido das Furnas, Bolo Levedo, and local pineapples for a true taste of the Azores.

Furnas lake
Wander along jaw-droppingly beautiful trails surrounding this lake, taking in the sights through clouds of volcanic steam.
Cradled in a volcanic crater, Lagoa das Furnas is filled with misty beauty and ancient traditions. Begin your visit with a stroll along the north shore, where volcanic steam rises from cooking pits filled with the famous Cozido das Furnas, buried by locals. Continue on to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitorias, a Gothic building tucked unexpectedly into the landscape. Then, walk along lakeside trails, where the still waters reflect the forested rim and the sound of birdsong surrounds you.

Land meets the sea at this natural masterpiece, replete with waterfalls and cliffside gardens.
Nordeste is where Sao Miguel’s wild beauty reveals itself in full: cliffs, forests, and waterfalls. Start at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Natural Park, where watermills and dramatic waterfalls are tucked into the foliage. Your guide will take you down the coastal route to the spectacular Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, two clifftop gardens with panoramic Atlantic views - perfect for photos or a quiet moment. If time allows, stop at Farol do Arnel, the island’s oldest lighthouse, sitting above the sea. Along the way, sample fresh seafood or traditional pastries in local villages, and keep your camera ready at Poco Azul, a forest-hidden blue pool.
