Main attractions

  • Dos Ojos — Two Eyes — takes its name from two adjacent sinkholes connected by an underwater passage, visible from above as a pair of openings in the jungle floor; it is one of the entrances to what may be the longest underwater cave system in the world, stretching hundreds of kilometers beneath the Yucatán Peninsula
  • The snorkeling and diving conditions are among the best of any cenote in the region — extraordinary water clarity, submerged stalactites and stalagmites formed when the caves were above sea level during the last ice age, and a bat cave chamber accessible by swimming through a short dark passage
  • The two main pools offer different experiences — the smaller, more enclosed eye is darker and more cave-like; the larger is more open with better natural light and more comfortable for casual swimmers

Things to do

  • Snorkeling through the connected passages between the two eyes — the underwater visibility regularly exceeds 100 metres and the submerged limestone formations are unlike anything accessible at surface level
  • The bat cave — a dry chamber within the cave system reached by swimming through a short dark passage — houses thousands of bats roosting on the ceiling; a guide leads this section and it is one of the most memorable experiences the cenote system offers

What to eat

  • Facilities on-site are minimal — bring snacks and water from Cancún or Tulum; the nearest reliable food options are in the Tulum hotel zone or town, a short drive away

Main attractions

  • El Castillo — Tulum's defining structure, a temple-pyramid perched directly on the clifftop above the Caribbean; its position was functional as well as ceremonial, serving as a lighthouse to guide Maya canoes through a break in the offshore reef below
  • The Temple of the Frescoes preserves original Maya painted murals depicting the rain deity Chaac and the descending god — some of the best-preserved polychrome frescoes in the Maya world, visible through protective grilles on the exterior
  • The walled city enclosure gives Tulum a legibility rare among Maya sites — three landward walls and the sea cliff as the fourth defense create a coherent, walkable urban footprint whose logic is immediately readable from the entrance

Things to do

  • Descend to the beach below the cliff via the wooden staircase within the site — swimming is permitted and the view back up to El Castillo from the water, with turquoise Caribbean sea in the foreground, is the defining image of the Yucatán coast
  • Walk the full site perimeter along the clifftop path for uninterrupted sea views and a sense of Tulum's strategic position — the drop to the water below and the reef visible offshore make the defensive logic of the location immediately clear

What to eat

  • Eat before arriving or after leaving — food within the site is limited and overpriced; Tulum town's mercado serves excellent Yucatecan food at honest prices, and the hotel zone has everything from beachfront tacos to serious restaurants

Know more about your day trip

Yes, this day trip is family friendly. Children typically enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the calm waters of Dos Ojos, which has shallow areas and equipment for kids. The Tulum ruins involve light walking on flat paths, and iguanas are often spotted along the way. Strollers are difficult on the rocky paths, so a baby carrier is more practical for small children.
Tulum is roughly 80 miles (130 km) south of Cancun, with the one-way drive taking around 1 hour and 30 minutes. The full round trip with stops at Dos Ojos Cenote and the Tulum ruins lasts about 6 hours and 45 minutes. This makes it one of the most accessible day trips from Cancun, leaving plenty of time for swimming, exploring, and photos.
Yes, a small beach lies directly beneath the cliffs of the Tulum archaeological zone, accessed by a wooden staircase from inside the site. Swimming is permitted when conditions allow, and the view back up to El Castillo from the water is one of the most photographed scenes in the Yucatan. Bring sandals and a towel if you plan to take a dip.
Dos Ojos is a top destination for swimming, snorkeling, and cave diving thanks to exceptional water clarity that often exceeds 100 meters of visibility. Visitors can swim through the connected passages between the two sinkholes, explore submerged stalactites and stalagmites, or visit the bat cave chamber by passing through a short, dark swim. Equipment rental is available on-site.
Tulum is the only major Mayan archaeological site built directly on the Caribbean coast, dramatically perched on cliffs above turquoise waters. Highlights include El Castillo, which doubled as a lighthouse for trading canoes, and the Temple of the Frescoes with its preserved Mayan murals. The walled city offers a clear, walkable layout with sweeping sea views from every angle.
Bring a swimsuit, towel, water shoes, and biodegradable sunscreen, which is required at the cenote and beach. Pack a hat, sunglasses, light walking shoes, and plenty of water. The Tulum ruins offer little shade, so sun protection is important. A waterproof phone case or dry bag is useful for keeping electronics safe while swimming or descending to the beach below the ruins.
The dry season from November to April offers warm, sunny weather ideal for both the cenote and the open-air ruins. Mornings are coolest and least crowded, especially at Tulum, where the site can fill up by midday. The cenote stays cool and pleasant year-round, while seaweed levels at the Tulum beach can vary seasonally.
Dos Ojos, which translates to Two Eyes in Spanish, takes its name from two adjacent circular sinkholes connected by an underwater passage. From above, the pair of openings in the jungle floor resembles a set of eyes peering up. The cenote is part of one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world, stretching for hundreds of kilometers beneath the Yucatan Peninsula.
