General admission to the Giza Plateau is bought at the main ticket office and grants access to the outdoor area, the Sphinx, and the surroundings. Separate tickets are needed to enter individual pyramids and the Solar Boat Museum. Buying online through the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities helps you skip lines, especially during peak season. Bring your passport, since identification is sometimes requested at certain entry points.
Yes, visitors can enter the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the smaller pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure with separate tickets purchased in addition to general plateau admission. Access is limited daily, so arriving early helps secure entry. Inside, narrow, low passages lead to the burial chambers, and the climb can feel cramped, hot, and humid. Travelers with claustrophobia, mobility issues, or breathing difficulties may prefer to stay outside.
Vendors and camel handlers can be persistent at the Giza Plateau. A polite but firm "no, thank you" usually works, and avoiding eye contact with hawkers helps. If you do want a camel or horse ride, agree on the price, route, and time in writing or by photograph before mounting, and pay only at the end. Stay close to your driver or chosen pickup point and avoid following anyone away from the main visitor areas.
The Pyramids of Giza sit on the Giza Plateau, about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of central Cairo. Driving time is typically 30 to 60 minutes each way, depending on traffic, which can be heavy during weekday rush hours. The full round trip runs about five and a half hours, leaving roughly four hours at the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the surrounding tombs. Mornings tend to flow more smoothly than late afternoons.
The Giza Plateau includes more than the three main pyramids. Don't miss the Great Sphinx, the Solar Boat Museum displaying a reconstructed wooden ship from Khufu's burial complex, and the smaller pyramids of queens and nobles. The newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum is just minutes away and houses the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, including treasures of Tutankhamun. Adding it to your day is well worth considering.
The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable for exploring the open desert plateau, with milder temperatures and clear skies. Summer visits, especially in June, July, and August, can be very hot, so early morning starts are essential. Sunrise and sunset offer the most striking light for photography and the calmest crowds.
Comfortable closed-toe shoes are essential for the sandy, uneven terrain. Bring a hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and plenty of water, since shade is very limited on the plateau. A scarf or light long-sleeve layer protects against sun and dust, and modest clothing is appreciated when visiting nearby areas. Carry small bills in Egyptian pounds for tips, snack vendors, and optional camel or horse rides arranged on-site.
Early morning, right at opening time, offers cooler temperatures, softer light for photography, and the smallest crowds, especially before tour buses arrive. Late afternoon is also pleasant, with golden light on the stones and the Sphinx. The Sound and Light show takes place after dark and presents the pyramids' history with music and projections, offering a different perspective. Avoiding midday in summer is strongly recommended due to intense heat.
