Overview: car trip from Passau to Munich
A car trip with Daytrip from Passau to Munich might feel like an uncertain decision, considering Passau is undoubtedly one of the best and most beautiful walkable German cities to spend time in, but it's worth it. You might be saying goodbye to the southern foothills of the Bavarian Forest mountain range and the stunning Baroque and Gothic architecture found in the city, but you'll be saying hello to Munichâa city with a big heart and much to see and do.
With Munich on the horizon, Daytripâs professional English-speaking drivers will share easy conversation, many smiles, and local tips you won't want to miss out on. Our drivers know the area and can help you get acquainted with Munich before you set foot in the city. We can even accommodate a few sightseeing adventures in Straubing and Regensburg if you're in the mood for a taste of history before beginning your exploration of Munich.
About Munich
Munich is the third-largest city in Germany and Bavaria's capital. It is located near the River Isar on the fringes of the beautiful Bavarian Alps. With a population of just over 1.4 million, it might not be a vastly big city, but its alleyways and cobblestoned pavements are brimming with history and cultural excitement.
Munich began as a monasteryâlike other European citiesâand steadily grew into a settlement when the monks of the area were allowed by the Duke of Bavaria to establish a market near the Salzburg River crossing. The market drew crowds, and these crowds began to settle in the region. Over the years, Munich has been involved in many different historical events that have influenced everything from its architecture and culture to its food and people.
Nowadays, Munich is a vibrant and laid-back city well-known by travelers for its rich cultural calendar, seasonal festivals, stunning churches, memorable museums, and outstanding palaces. Travelers can easily spend an entire day wandering the city and exploring its markets, boutiques, and cafes, trying different versions of tasty konditoreiâMunich's famous cake.
It's also worth noting that Munich is a city that loves the arts. From its world-class opera house that has flourished in recent years thanks to the Munich Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Opera Company to its dramatics arts association like the Bavarian State Dramatic Company and its many libraries.
The city is also nearly bursting with intriguing galleries, like the Bavarian State Picture Galleries, which houses some of the most magnificent treasures accumulated by the Wittlebach family. Some of these treasures, originating in the 16th century, are priceless. Those who are fans of Renaissance-era Dutch and German paintings or Flemish Baroque paintings should consider a tour.
However, no matter what you plan to do in Munich, whether it is simply museum hopping, trying every delicious pastry in sight, or booking a seat for an orchestra performance or exciting festival, Munich has something for everyone.
From Passau to Munich: travel tips
Munich is a city of tech, tankards, art, and eccentricity. It's a place to visit if you want to be immersed in the weird and wonderfulâespecially considering it's one of the safest European places to visit. However, although you can get by on street smarts and common sense alone, you might want to follow the tips we've shared below to make your trip from Passau to Munich even smoother.
Be sure to carry cash
In Germany, many places accept cards, but smaller markets, stores, and local food shops, such as butchers and bakeries, still prefer cash.
So, if you plan to drive from Passau to Munich and want to stop and explore and buy a few things, it's best to carry cash. The same goes for wandering around Munich when you get to the city, as you likely don't want to miss out on a tasty treat because you forgot to draw a few euros.
Be aware of store closing times
Few people realize this, but Germany has incredibly strict rules regarding operating times. According to German law, most stores must be closed on Sundays and sometimes Saturdays too, if a public holiday falls on this date.
Unfortunately, this means that if you plan to travel to Munich over a weekend, you need to plan most of your shopping and sightseeing for Saturday. However, it is worth noting that a few places are exempt from this rule, like a few museums and bakeries, so just make sure you plan your trip properly.
Hire a private Daytrip driver
It might only be a two-hour drive from Passau to Munich, but why drive when you can hire a private driver with Daytrip and be driven to the city in luxury? Typically, hiring a private car service like Daytrip alleviates much of the travel stress and hassle one can face when traveling between two cities in Germany.
Not only will you not have to worry about navigating German road signs and roadways, but you'll also get to watch the beautiful scenery or brush up on your language skills with your driver. So consider Daytrip when looking for a convenient door-to-door service!
How to get from Passau to Munich
There are few transportation options for traveling from Passau to Munich, but this doesn't mean it's a lost cause. Depending on your travel preferences and wants, there are three options: bus, train, and private car service. Let's take a look at each so you know what you're getting into beforehand.
From Passau to Munich by train
The train is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get from Passau to Munich. Since a trip only takes about two hours and 20 minutes by train, you shouldn't expect ticket prices to be too crazy. On average, a train ticket costs between $33 and $55 (âŹ30-âŹ50) depending on the train company you chooseâOBB Intercity or Deutsche Bahn Regionalâand the time you want to travel.
One big positive to train travel is that the earliest trains start departing at 4:40 AM, and the last trains depart at 9:28 PM, so there's more than enough time to catch one. However, you are not guaranteed a comfortable experience, nor will there be any sightseeing stops during your trip.
From Passau to Munich by bus
Only one bus line offers transportation from Passau to Munich: Flixbus. This bus service offers a few daily trips, but most trips are offered in the late evening, with individuals arriving in the early morning hours.
This is usually inconvenient for most travelers, so keep this in mind unless you plan on staying at a hostel in Munich or are going to make plans with your hotel for a late check-in. It's also worth noting that a ticket costs about 19 euros, and the trip can take between six hours, 40 minutes, and eight hours.
From Passau to Munich by private car transfer
When the choices are bus travel and train travel between Passau and Munich, we will choose the third option â driving with a private car service. Unlike bus and train travel, you get far more benefits and are more likely to enjoy your travel experience.
For example, if you travel with Daytrip, you won't have to worry about pesky timetables or rushing to train or bus stations since you'll get to choose when you travel. You'll also have the opportunity to create your own travel itinerary between Passau and Munich and add sightseeing stops along the way.
Unlike other door-to-door car services, Daytrips drivers are also more than willing to share their insider knowledge to enhance your travel experience. Not bad for only $59 (âŹ54), right?

The weather is warm and pleasant in the spring, and you'll have the opportunity to roam the streets, gardens, museums, and galleries without brushing past crowds.

Personal and professional transfer from Munich to Passau.
âWe were looking at options for transfer from Munich to Passau for a river cruise and came across DayTrip. We added a stop in Straubing to stretch our legs and grab a bite to eat. It was a charming town, with Christmas Market in the main square. Perfect. Our driver Andrew was timely, personable and made the long drive enjoyable. Iâd highly recommend this as an alternative for anyone that may get motion sickness from a train ride, or likes a more personal experience.â
âMy sister and I are traveling with our mother. We are en route from Munich to Passau for a Viking Danube River cruise. My sister and I have traveled all over the world for work so can adapt to anything. The issue is mom. She can sort of walk but also needs a wheelchair, and is incredibly fussy. Initially we thought we could get from Munich to Passau by train and from the train station to the boat all on our own. Then, seeing how awkward mom was with the cobblestone streets in Munich, realized we needed a ĂąâŹĆPlan BĂąâŹÂ. DayTrip to the rescue and their charming, capable, incredibly patient driver, Catuna. This young man really saved the day for us. We wanted to stop in Regensberg for lunch along the way. He just jumped right in as if he were a ĂąâŹĆlittle brotherĂąâŹÂ helping mom in and out of the van, pushing her wheelchair and speaking to her so kindly! We were totally blown away by his patience and big heart. He is also an excellent driver. And when we got to the port designated which turned out to have been changed at the last minute, he hung in with us making sure we got to exactly the right spot. Catuna is a rock star. And DayTrip is awesome. They made it super easy for booking and they have Catuna. So go with DayTrip and ask for Catuna. You will be in excellent care!â

âWe truly enjoyed our transfer from Passau to Munich. Martin was wonderful. He was such a good driver, and very patient and helpful with our stops along the way. Plus the best thing is the convenience of using DayTrip - so easy, professional and comfortable.â
