Elciego's historic center is largely pedestrian-friendly, as private cars are not permitted to drive through the old town. However, the village sits on a hill and many streets are paved with uneven cobblestones, which can be challenging for wheelchairs and strollers. The surroundings and main plaza are more manageable, but visitors with limited mobility should be prepared for some uneven terrain throughout the village.
Elciego is perfectly positioned for exploring the wider region. The medieval walled town of Laguardia is just a short drive away and offers stunning views, underground wine cellars, and a beautifully preserved old quarter. Logrono, the capital of La Rioja, is about 30 minutes away and famous for its tapas scene on Calle Laurel. Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque capital, is about an hour away and well worth a visit for its old town and contemporary arts scene.
Elciego's biggest draw is the Marques de Riscal winery, which offers tours of its iconic Frank Gehry-designed building and wine production facilities. The village's own historic center, with its medieval lanes and the Church of San Andres, is worth a stroll. The nearby Bodegas Valdelana hosts an excellent wine museum. The surrounding Rioja Alavesa countryside is dotted with family-run wineries ideal for tastings and visits.

The Batalla del Vino (Wine Battle) in Haro takes place on June 29th, where participants douse each other in red wine in a joyful outdoor celebration. The San Mateo Harvest Festival in Logrono in late September celebrates the grape harvest with parades, music, and tastings. Many individual wineries also host harvest events during September and October that are open to visitors.
The Rioja wine region is enjoyable from spring through autumn. May and June bring mild weather and blooming vines, while September and October are arguably the best months, coinciding with the grape harvest (vendimia). The San Mateo harvest festival in Logrono takes place in late September and is a lively celebration not to be missed. Summer can be warm and busy, while winters are cool and quiet.
