LÀr dig mer om resor frÄn Certaldo
Certaldo hosts the Mercantia festival each July, an internationally acclaimed street theater and arts festival that transforms the medieval upper town into an open-air stage. It's one of Tuscany's most unique cultural events. Certaldo also celebrates local traditions tied to Boccaccio, and the surrounding Chianti and Val d'Elsa area hosts numerous harvest festivals and food events in the fall.
Certaldo's central location in the Val d'Elsa makes it an excellent base for exploring Tuscany. Florence is about 30 kilometers (18 miles) to the north, San Gimignano is just 13 kilometers away (8 miles), and Siena, Volterra, and the Chianti wine region are all within easy reach. Its relatively undiscovered status means you'll find a more authentic local atmosphere than in busier Tuscan destinations.
Certaldo Alto's medieval streets are largely cobblestone and steep, making navigation difficult for strollers and wheelchairs. The funicular connecting the upper and lower towns does provide some access. The lower town (Certaldo Basso) is flatter and more accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns should contact specific attractions in advance, as accessibility in medieval hilltop towns can be limited compared to modern city centers.
Certaldo Alto (the upper medieval town) is the highlight, reached by funicular or on foot. Key sights include the Casa del Boccaccio (Boccaccio's birthplace), the Palazzo Pretorio with its colorful terracotta plaques, and the Sant'Jacopo e Filippo church. The views over the Val d'Elsa valley are stunning. Certaldo is also well placed for day trips to San Gimignano, Siena, Florence, and Volterra.
Italy uses the euro (EUR). Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops in larger towns, but smaller businesses and local markets in places like Certaldo may prefer cash. It's a good idea to carry some euros with you, especially when visiting smaller villages or rural areas. ATMs (known as "bancomat") are available in Certaldo's lower town and nearby San Gimignano.
The best time to visit Certaldo is from April to June and from September to October. Spring brings wildflowers and green landscapes, while early fall offers mild temperatures and the grape and olive harvests. July and August are hot and busy in Tuscany. Winter is quiet and cool, but many smaller businesses may have reduced hours or close for extended periods.
The closest major airport is Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci), about 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) north of Certaldo. Pisa International Airport is also a popular option, roughly 80 kilometers (about 49 miles) away, and often offers more international connections. Both airports have good road links to Certaldo, and a private transfer is one of the most comfortable ways to make the journey directly to the town.
In and around Certaldo, look out for classic Tuscan dishes like ribollita (a hearty bread and vegetable soup), pappardelle with wild boar ragu, bistecca alla Fiorentina (T-bone steak), and crostini with chicken liver pate. Local pecorino cheese, Chianti Classico wine, and Vernaccia di San Gimignano white wine are regional staples. The area's olive oil is also among the finest in Italy.
