Veliki Tabor Castle

This 15th century castle is home to the legend of Veronika of Desenice, a noblewoman who was murdered by her husband’s father.

Om

Perched on a hill 334 meters above sea level, Veliki Tabor offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, stretching off into Slovenia. The castle’s original structure dates back to the 15th century. When the Croatian aristocracy began building fortified castles in the region to stave off the Turkish threat at the end of the 16th century, they increased the defensive capabilities of the original structure. Later, with the advent of gunpowder, four semicircular towers were added. Toady, the castle has been fully renovated and houses a museum which not only showcases castle life, but features special exhibitions, such as works inspired by the tragic legend of Veronika, who married the son of local Count, and was murdered by her husband’s father for being unworthy of the station.
