Holycross Abbey

With its magnificent medieval architecture, the oldest bell in Ireland, and a relic of the True Cross, this abbey is a historic treasure trove.

Om

Built in 1168, Holycross Abbey received its name around 1233 when Queen Isabella of AngoulĂȘme bestowed the abbey with a relic of the True Cross or Holy Rood. Abandoned in 1633, the abbey was named a national monument in 1880, but wasn’t restored until the 1970s. Exploring this peaceful landmark, visitors will find medieval friezes, intricate carvings, the oldest bell in Ireland, and of course the enclosure containing the relic of the true cross. On Wednesdays and Sundays at 2PM the local community provides a guided tour of the abbey, with the possibility of arranging other times with some advance notice.
