Besakih Temple

Bali’s largest and holiest Hindu temple doesn’t just offer historic architecture, but stupendous views of the surrounding landscape.

Om

Standing 1000 meters above sea level, Pura Besakih was first mentioned in the 11th century. Originally a temple to the dragon god Besakih, the past thousand years have seen it develop into the largest Hindu complex in Bali, which has been state-run since the 15th century. Today, the complex consists of 86 individual temples and shrines in 20 sanctuaries catering to every caste and regency. The only all-inclusive temple in Bali, over 70 ceremonies and celebrations are held here a year. Most notable are the temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity. The central Pura Penataran Agung has white banners for Shiva, the destroyer, Pura Kiduling Kreteg is to the right side with red banners for Brahma, the creator, and Pura Batu Madeg with its black banners honors Vishnu, the preserver. While many of the other temples are closed to visitors, the traditional architecture and stupendous views are more than reason enough to explore the grounds. Please note: as this is a holy site, a sarong is required to enter.
