The main fenced viewing area is safe and well-maintained, with paved paths and observation platforms suitable for families. The unfenced cliff path beyond the visitor center requires care and is not recommended in strong winds or wet weather. Visitors should stay well back from the edge, as the cliff face is undercut and erosion is ongoing in places.
Yes, on clear days, the three Aran Islands, Inis Mor, Inis Meain, and Inis Oirr, are visible to the north out in Galway Bay. Visibility is best on bright, calm days, often after rain has cleared the air. Binoculars help reveal more detail, and the views combine the islands with the Twelve Bens mountains of Connemara behind them.
The Cliffs of Moher are about 110 miles (177 km) from Killarney, with a drive of roughly 2 hours 30 minutes each way. The route crosses County Limerick into County Clare, with views of the Shannon Estuary and the Burren's distinctive limestone landscape on the approach to the Atlantic coast.
The drive from Killarney crosses scenic stretches of County Kerry, Limerick, and Clare. Highlights along or near the route include the Shannon Estuary, traditional farming villages, and the edge of the Burren, a UNESCO Global Geopark known for its rare limestone pavement and wildflowers. O'Brien's Tower is a 19th-century viewing turret built at the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher by local landlord Cornelius O'Brien to entertain Victorian visitors. From the top, you get the most complete perspective of the cliff face stretching in both directions. The walk along the cliff path past the tower reveals the true scale of the cliffs better than the main visitor center.
Atlantic weather changes quickly. Bring waterproof clothing, layered tops, and sturdy walking shoes with grip, as paths can be slick. A windproof jacket is essential, since the cliff edge is exposed and breezy even in summer. Hats and warm gloves are wise outside the warm months, and sunglasses and sunscreen help on the bright, reflective coastline.
The cliffs are open year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the longest daylight, mildest weather, and best chances of clear views. Summer is the busiest, especially midday. Arriving before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM avoids the largest crowds. Winter visits are dramatic but very cold and windy, with shorter visitor center hours.
