Comfortable walking shoes are essential, since both stops involve uneven ground and a fair amount of walking. Light, breathable clothing suits the typically warm Cretan weather, and a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are useful at the open-air Knossos site, where shade is limited. Bring a refillable water bottle, especially in summer. For Heraklion's churches and the cathedral interior, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is appreciated.
