The drive south along the Ring Road takes roughly 40 to 45 minutes depending on conditions. You can visit a local bakery that bakes traditional rye bread by burying it in the geothermally heated earth, explore geothermal gardens, or stop at the town's Geothermal Park where you can cook eggs directly in the hot springs. It is a genuine geothermal community, not a tourist attraction built around one feature, which makes the stop feel much richer than just a hike.
The Reykjadalur trail is rated moderate. The uphill stretch at the start requires some effort and the path can be slippery in wet conditions, but there are no technical sections and no special equipment needed. Most reasonably active adults handle it without difficulty. Children who are comfortable on uneven terrain can manage it too, though parents should check current trail conditions before going with young kids. The reward at the end, bathing in a naturally heated river surrounded by an open volcanic valley, is well worth the climb.
The trail from the Hveragerdi trailhead to the bathing area is 3 km (1.9 miles) each way. The first half is a steady uphill climb through an active geothermal landscape with steam vents, bubbling mud pools, and a waterfall along the way. The terrain levels off as you approach the river. Most hikers reach the bathing spot in about 45 to 60 minutes. The total outing including soaking time is typically around 3 to 4 hours, making it a half-day experience that fits easily into a day trip itinerary.
The essentials are a swimsuit, a towel, sturdy hiking shoes, and enough water and snacks for a 2-hour round-trip hike. The trail can be steep and uneven in places, so footwear with grip matters. Iceland's weather can shift quickly, so bring windproof and waterproof layers even if it looks clear at the start. A small dry bag or waterproof pouch is useful for keeping your clothes dry while you bathe. There are changing facilities at the river, so no need to hike in your swimsuit.
Getting to Reykjadalur requires reaching the trailhead just north of Hveragerdi town, which public buses do not serve directly. A private transfer drops you at the right starting point, waits or returns for you on your schedule, and means you are not racing back to catch a bus after your soak. It also gives you the flexibility to spend time in town before or after the hike, whether that is a stop at a geothermal bakery or a walk through the town center, without having to manage connections or rigid timetables.
