A trip from Tangier to Fez will take you down along the northwestern coast of Morocco by the Atlantic Ocean to Kenitra. From Kenitra, you’ll begin your journey inland and get to Fez, about 125 miles (200 km) from the coast. The A5 and A2 highways reliably connect major cities in Morocco and cover long distances in a short amount of time.
Morocco is still up-and-coming in traveler circles and your trip is an excellent opportunity to see the more obscure parts of North Africa. Unlike a bus or train, a private driver can take you right where you’d like to go in between the major cities, so let’s get started!
About Fez
Fez is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, or historical capitals, and is nicknamed the “Athens of Africa.” Visitors traveling from Tangier to Fez are amazed at the sheer amount of preserved medieval buildings and stunning Islamic architecture in its Medina district.
Fez is also home to one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of al-Qarawiyyin, which has been educating students for 1,100 years. Fez is more inland than Tangier and has more of that old-world feel than the coastal cities, so it’s great to see both places during your visit.

### Fes? Fez?
You might see Fes or Fez on maps and travel guides. Don’t fear, these are both referring to the same city!
### Choose your outfit wisely
If you’ll be visiting religious sites, longer and looser clothing is required. Your shoulders, chest, and knees should be covered regardless of gender. But this dress code is also the best way to dress for sun protection as well. Loose clothing keeps air circulating near your skin, and long sleeves protect your skin from sunburn. Pick clothing made from breathable material, like linen, and avoid uncomfortable synthetics.

Things to do when you get to Fez
After a long, exciting day of travel from Tangier to Fez, get a good night’s sleep so you can see all Fez has to offer, starting with these activities:
### Go back in time in the Medina
The Fes el-Bali Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning 540 acres with over 9,000 winding cobblestone streets. It is the most complete and preserved medieval city of the Arab world. Enter the medina through the Bab Bou Jeloud Gate, or Blue Gate, to start your trip in the oldest section. With such a large distance to cover, schedule an entire day for this part of your trip.
The Medina is completely car-free and its maze-like streets will take you back in time to its founding in the 9th century. It has over 300 mosques and dozens of administrative buildings, as it served as the capital for Morocco multiple times.
Here you’ll find thousands of shops in the _souks, _or bazaars, where you can buy handmade rugs, leather goods, spices, perfumes, pottery, and jewelry. Watch craftsmen make pots and rugs right in their shops, and purchase a fez, the traditional hat for this city.
### Have a spa day in a hammam
Have a traditional Moroccan hammam experience, where you can relax and rejuvenate with a steam bath, exfoliating scrub, and aromatic massage. Enjoy these centuries-old wellness practices in one of the oldest cities in the Arab world.
When is the best time to visit Fez
Plan your visit to Morocco in the spring or autumn for the best experience. During these shoulder seasons, the average temperature is about 77° F (25° C) and sunny. You’ll find a slight difference in temperature and less of the ocean breeze as you leave the coast of Tangier to Fez, which sits about 200 miles (300 km) inland.
The Moroccan heat is very intense in the summer, especially for inland cities like Fez. Temperatures in July and August regularly reach 96° F (36° C) with a very high UV index. If you’re unaccustomed to extreme heat, avoid the summers in Morocco.

Alternatively, driving takes about the same time as the train but has the added benefit of privacy and flexibility to make stops at local attractions.
Yes, the old town of Fez is very walkable, especially the medina, Fes el-Bali. The narrow, winding streets are best explored on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended! In other parts of the city, you may find the public buses crowded and difficult to navigate as a foreigner, so don’t be afraid to order a taxi for longer distances.
Yes, Morocco is a generally safe travel destination. Follow the standard travel precautions, like keeping your valuables close by, not carrying too much cash, and avoiding secluded streets. The biggest crime is petty theft of wallets and phones, so keep those under close watch for the best travel experience.
These cities have different geography and vibes, so comparison is difficult! A visit to both cities is the best way to see the variety of Morocco. Fez is further inland and has a more traditional Moroccan atmosphere, while Tangier is a port city with a lot more international influence.
Moroccan Railways can transport you from Fez to Tangier. The trip costs between $11 and $27 and takes 3 and a half to 4 and a half hours. You will usually transfer in Kenitra, but there are occasionally direct trains. Moroccan Railways is, for the most part, reliable, but you should put a time buffer into your schedule for delays.

"We had a great trip with Jamal from Tangier to Fez. He confirmed our trip on WhatsAp the night prior, arrived on time to pick us up. Jamal was very considerate, friendly and flexible. He drove responsibly and we felt very safe and comfortable with him. We had two planned stops on route which worked really well. Jamal was happy to stop for photos when we wished and pointed out the sites to us on route. We would have no hesitation in using Jamal again.

"As always, our experience with your services was wonderful. Abdenour contacted us in advance of our scheduled trip and was there on time to meet us for the pickup. He even changed the pickup location based on the suggestion from the property where we were staying.
Abdenour even took us to an unexpected panoramic view of our scheduled stop in another town along the way and took our picture which was great! He was flexible with an unexpected delay and also provided tissues / toilet paper at a restroom stop!
We look forward to using your services again on another trip.

"My mom and I had the pleasure of having Soufiane as a driver twice this week. He drove us from Tangier to Fes on 26 June, and then from Fes to Marrakesh on 30 June. Soufiane was fantastic.
We had a stopover in Chefchaouen on the way to Fes, and one in Casablanca on the way to Marrakesh. Both times Soufiane gave us excellent recommendations for our stop, and he was easy to reach when we were wrapping up each visit.
The cars we drove in were very clean and comfortable, and Soufiane was quite helpful with loading and unloading our luggage. He kept the car cool for us, and he was quick to find a roadside bathroom when we needed to stop.
In short, our experiences with Soufiane were excellent, and I would highly recommend him as a driver. Another wonderful experience with MyDayTrip!"

"Soufiane drove us and did a great job. He told us where to go in Chefchaouen and gave us advice for that part of the trip. 2 hours was enough time for us. He also gave us advice for when we got to Fes including to get a guide for the Medina. His advice was very helpful and we hope to ride with him again!"

"We just completed our trip from Tangier to Fez with Soufiane (trip C3F656). He was a marvelous guide and driver and we visited the two sites on our list as well as stopping for a nice lunch. He made sure our Riad host met us at the Blue Gate. His English was excellent. We recommend him highly."

"Our trip went absolutely perfect! Mohammed was right outside waiting for us after our flight took forever to go through immigration, he was amazing, super friendly from the moment he picked us up and he was extremely knowledgeable about the areas we were going through, he made the very long trip very enjoyable with tons of stories about the different communities we went by, he made us feel taken care of and very calm throughout the drive and our very short stay in Chefchaouen. He drove very safe and everyone knew him on the way to Fez. I would recommend this service, not only for its convenience but for the incredible customer service we received from Mohammed, we felt welcomed from the time we landed in Tangier. Thank you so much for providing an incredible experience and making our trip so easy and enjoyable. "

"This was the first day of our two day trip, we had a very short trip, my daughter is in Spain studying and we could only get there for the weekend.
Prior to us traveling the communication with daytrip and our driver Amine were great. Daytrip usually responded in less than a day and Amine was quite fast to respond. Amine let us know the day before he was on his way to town and what car to look for.
Our day started with a greeting and great smile from Amine, he helped us with the luggage made sure we were ready to start to the journey. He started by making sure he had the right information and asked us questions on what we were looking to see, from the very start it was clear Amine wanted us to have a great time but also see all of the beauty his country has to offer.
As we started he wanted to make sure every detail was accounted for. Small things like do we need something to drink, coffee, it will be a little bit of a long drive. After stopping for coffee and helping us order what we needed we were off to see Morocco, Amine saw that I was trying to take a picture out of the window, he slowed down and pulled over so I could capture the picture. A very small thing but him being able to anticipate our wants was huge. Was very polite always asking if the air was ok, he had a radio station on that played American music, but we asked him to change it so something he would listen to. Just every detail you could think of that you might want, Amine was there to help with it.
We had preselected our stops along the way, Amine would give details on each location and what to look for in the city what to see, and he would ask us questions on why we picked this location so he knew he was helping us find what we wanted to see.
Each city had its own breathtaking views but Chefchaouen was simply out of this world. I needed to exchange money, Amie was able to help me locate a place that would do it, and helped us find a great spot for lunch. As we were traveling he offered advice on what to see, explaining if we wanted to stay longer in one spot than we booked we can, and what we would not if we didn’t make it that spot. Every time my daughter got in an out of the car, Amine would open the door, it was all of the small things he did, going above and beyond, that made the trip just that much more special.
As we made our way from site to site Amine would ask if we are tired, do we want anything, need anything want pictures along the way. Amine knew the roads, his driving was very safe, and he was always looking to take care of us. The car was very clean, and very comfortable to ride in. If we asked to use the bathroom, he was always looking for the best place to stop, there were a few times he said no this area is not clean, let’s wait a little bit.
I can’t thank Amine enough for making this truly the most memorable trip I have ever been on.
My one suggestion to Day Trip would be; have the traveler set an amount of time they want to travel and connect them with a driver, before selecting everything to see and how far to go. Amine knew the area so well, I would have liked to have him help me pick how long I would need in each area. Having the driver as part of the pre-trip planning would have been helpful.
Overall I highly recommend the company, and Amine. I would give Amine 10 stars if I could he was simply amazing.

"Our trip Tangier to Fes was very good. Sarhan kept us informed of the sites as we headed along the road. He showed us where to go in Meknes, then took us for a vehicle tour around the Palace. He picked us up on time and delivered us to the Riad on time. He also went the extra mile to help us find our Riad as our directions were a bit vague and the Riad were not answering the phone, so we had a few challenges. Without Sarhans help we would still be looking.
We would recommend your service. "
