Come face to face with the stone sentinels of a lost empire at the ancient Toltec capital โ€” an atmospheric and surprisingly crowd-free archaeological site that bridges the gap between the fall of Teotihuacรกn and the rise of the Aztecs.

What to see

  • The four towering Atlantean warrior statues atop Pyramid B โ€” 4.6-meter-tall basalt figures of Toltec warriors that once supported the temple roof, and among the most iconic and haunting images in all of Mesoamerican archaeology
  • The Coatepantli (Serpent Wall), decorated with carvings of feathered serpents and skulls that later inspired similar structures in Tenochtitlรกn, and the Burnt Palace โ€” a colonnaded ceremonial complex where the Toltec elite once gathered

What to do

  • Walk the ceremonial core of Tula Grande, taking in the main pyramid, the great ball court, and the Tzompantli platform, with sweeping views across the Tula Valley from the top of the pyramid
  • Visit the on-site Jorge R. Acosta Museum, which provides excellent context on Toltec culture, society, and the excavations that uncovered the site's extraordinary sculptures

What to try

  • Pairing Tula with nearby Tepotzotlรกn on the same day trip โ€” the two sites complement each other beautifully and together offer a full picture of the region's pre-Hispanic and colonial heritage within an hour of Mexico City

Take note

  • Tula sees a fraction of the crowds of Teotihuacรกn, making for a far more intimate experience with the ruins. The site is open daily 9:00 AMโ€“5:00 PM, and is located around 90 minutes north of Mexico City โ€” bring a hat, water, and comfortable shoes as the terrain is uneven and largely unshaded

Know more about your day trip

The town of Tula de Allende, just outside the archaeological zone, has a charming 16th-century Franciscan monastery with carved stone reliefs. Nearby, you can find local markets selling pulque, the traditional fermented agave drink of the region, and small eateries serving barbacoa, pastes, and other Hidalgo specialties. The neighboring Pueblo Magico of Tepotzotlan also pairs well with Tula.
Tula is smaller and quieter than Teotihuacan, but no less fascinating. While Teotihuacan dazzles with its colossal Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, Tula offers a more intimate experience with iconic Atlantean sculptures, beautifully carved reliefs, and far fewer crowds. Many travelers visit both to understand how the Toltec culture bridged Teotihuacan and the later Aztec civilization.
Most visitors find that 2 to 3 hours is enough to explore Tula at a relaxed pace. This allows time to walk the ceremonial core of Tula Grande, see the Coatepantli serpent wall and Burnt Palace, and visit the on-site Jorge R. Acosta Museum. Photography enthusiasts may want a little more time.
Tula is about 56 miles (90 km) north of Mexico City in the state of Hidalgo. The drive typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, though heavy traffic leaving the capital can extend this. Departing early in the morning is the easiest way to make the most of your day at the archaeological zone.
The Atlantean warriors are four colossal stone figures atop Pyramid B, each about 15 feet (4.6 m) tall and carved from basalt. They depict armed Toltec warriors and once supported the roof of a temple dedicated to Quetzalcoatl. Today, they stand in the open air and rank among the most iconic and haunting images in all of Mesoamerican archaeology.
Tula sits in the high-altitude Mexican plateau with strong sun and very little shade among the ruins. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and at least one liter of water. Wear sturdy closed-toe walking shoes for the uneven stone surfaces. A light jacket is useful for cooler mornings, and a small backpack helps carry snacks and a camera.
Tula is open year-round, but the dry season from November to April brings the most pleasant walking weather. Weekday mornings are the quietest, with cooler temperatures and softer light for photographing the warriors. Avoid Sundays in summer, when Mexican families often visit, and skip the hottest midday hours by arriving close to opening time at 9:00 AM.
The Toltecs were a Mesoamerican civilization that flourished from roughly 900 to 1150 CE, between the decline of Teotihuacan and the rise of the Aztecs. Their capital, known as Tollan, is the modern site of Tula. The Aztecs revered the Toltecs as legendary artisans and warriors, and Toltec art, religion, and architecture shaped much of later central Mexican culture.
