Krems an der Donau
Enjoyable eating and drinking, an atmospheric historical centre, rivers of top-quality wine from local vineyards and a couple of unexpected museums attract the tourist to Krems an der Donau. Krems is the ideal place for a relaxing stroll, stopping by the churches and museums, walking along the banks of the Danube and sampling the local tipples as you go — although no visitor should depart without first experiencing the legendary Marillenschnaps, the apricot brandy that the city is renowned for. With all this history, it may appear that Krems is dominated by the past. In reality, the city is also home to contemporary art and culture which play an important role in the city by adding variety and energy to public areas. One such example of this is the ‘Arts Mile’ containing the Caricature Museum, Kunsthalle Krems, the Lower Austrian Literature Center and various other cultural and diverse institutions.

Gottweig Abbey
Founded in 1083 and a Benedictine monastery from 1094, the abbey was rebuilt into its current Baroque form in the early eighteenth-century. Today, the abbey is run by a community of 45 monks. Visitors can explore the abbey church and the museum in the imperial wing that features dramatic Baroque style architecture in all its splendor, including the monumental imperial staircase with a ceiling fresco from 1739 — one of the largest and most beautiful baroque staircases in Europe. The abbey also presents its art collections in exhibitions staged in the adjoining royal and imperial rooms. Visitors can also see the abbey library of 130,000 books and manuscripts, all of which survived the Second World War without loss. Outside the abbey is just as splendid, with the impressive apricot orchard on the south side of the monastery, not to mention the magnificent views of the Wachau Valley from the abbey restaurant terrace.
