Interlaken to Fribourg and Murten: Private day trip

Derived from the Celtic word for “lakeside fortress”, Murten was founded in the 12th century next to an older fortification. A 15th century fire destroyed most of the town and it was rebuilt in stone, and it underwent a second wave of reconstruction in the 17th century thanks to an influx of wealth. Today, the Murton still looks much as it does in centuries past. It’s still encircled by its defensive wall, the only one in Switzerland that you can fully walk around, which offer fantastic views of the lake and the town below. After wandering the charming cobbled streets of the old town, and seeing what the arcaded shops have on offer, you can head to the town museum to learn about the region’s 6000 year history, or enjoy the sun down on the waterfront promenade.
