Maastricht is particularly charming during December when Christmas markets fill Vrijthof Square. The city hosts Carnival celebrations in February/March that completely transform the atmosphere. Thorn's white buildings are especially photogenic against blue skies or with flowering plants in spring and summer. Weekday visits offer a less crowded experience in both locations.
