Overview: Car trip from Sorrento to Ravello

For the perfect break from Sorrento's city life, head to the peaceful town of Ravello. The route for your Sorrento to Ravello transfer depends on which stops you’d like to experience on your road trip, but in general, the drive is 25 miles (39 km) and takes 90 minutes. Make it a day trip or the next stop in your Italian vacation—the choice is yours!

With a private driver, you have the flexibility to stop for that perfect shot, so have your camera ready! See Pompeii or Positano before arriving at Ravello for the ultimate Sorrentine Peninsula experience.

Daytrip makes it easy to turn this transfer into the perfect vacation with an itinerary made by you, for you!

About Ravello

Ravello, Italy, is an unassuming vacation town perched high above the Amalfi Coast in the Campania region. Its breathtaking vistas have attracted Italy's elite for centuries with panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lush, terraced coastline below.

This small town, with a population of around 2,500, was founded in the 5th century as a refuge from barbarian invasions. Today, it is best known for its many historical villas built by wealthy patriarchs in the Amalfi area.

Ravello Festival

Ravello is internationally recognized within the performing arts community for its annual Ravello Festival (also known as the Wagner Festival). This event began in 1953 to encourage tourism during the economically difficult years following WWII.

This event celebrates music, arts, and culture, drawing artists and audiences from around the globe. Performances are often held in the gardens of the Villa Rufolo for the inspiration they gave German composer Richard Wagner during his trip to the coast.

Natural beauty and leisure

Ravello is a haven for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Its position, 1200 feet (365 meters) above sea level, offers cooler temperatures and greener landscapes than the bustling coastal towns along the sea.

Walking trails around Ravello let you explore the Amalfi landscape, with paths leading through ancient forests, lemon groves, and secluded hamlets. It is a great day trip or weekend escape from the more crowded cities like Sorrento.

From Sorrento to Ravello: travel tips

Smart preparation makes travel easier! Don’t forget these tips when packing for your Sorrento to Ravello transfer!

Remember the midday riposo (siesta)

Due to the intense heat, expect shops and restaurants to close for a few hours from lunchtime to late afternoon for the riposo. While this is the Italian term, you might also know it as the siesta, a concept familiar to Spanish-speaking countries.

In Italy, days are long and sunny, and shops typically stay open late into the evening when the sun's rays are less harsh. It's wise to check that your planned afternoon sightseeing spots will be open during your visit.

Dress comfortably

Italy embraces effortless style, so take a cue from the locals by choosing loose-fitting clothes that protect your skin from sun damage. Natural fibers like linen are ideal for keeping cool, and a wide-brimmed hat will shield your eyes from the sun. Wear sturdy shoes or sandals with a heel strap to safely navigate Ravello’s many ancient stairs and hills.

Things to do when you get to Ravello

There is no shortage of amazing views and opulent villas on your trip from Sorrento to Ravello. Bring a backup battery for your camera, and wear a stylish outfit for your new profile photo!

Villa Rufolo

For breathtaking views of the coastline, visit Villa Rufolo on the edge of a cliff. Its terraces and gardens look their best in the springtime when the flowers bloom, and the breeze off the sea is still crisp. The gardens also host several concerts during the Ravello Festival, and it is easy to see why this view inspires musicians and artists.

Villa Cimbrone

On the "Terrace of Infinity," the skyline and sea will truly feel infinite as you gaze out over the railings. Villa Cimbrone’s gardens have a uniquely Italian blend of classical statues, exotic plants, and serene pathways. It is a 10-minute walk slightly uphill from Piazza Centrale, and it is worth calling ahead, as the garden does close occasionally for special events.

Duomo di Ravello (Ravello Cathedral)

By now you are surely an expert at Italian travel and know that every central town square is going to have a cathedral! This 11th-century cathedral is dedicated to San Pantaleone and features a stunning bronze door and a pulpit adorned with intricate mosaics. The museum inside houses religious artifacts and artworks.

Piazza Duomo

The central square of Ravello is the heart of the town, surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and shops. It is right outside the Duomo di Ravello and the perfect place to rest your feet and have a coffee after walking up and down all those hills! (You may also see it called Piazza Centrale.)

Hiking

While the Amalfi coast’s famous Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) doesn’t quite reach Ravello, there are still scenic hiking trails with trailheads in Ravello that offer unbelievable views.

The hiking trails in this area are rated moderate to hard due to the elevation and rocky paths, and you should always have a bottle of water, appropriate shoes, and skin protection. If you are visiting Ravello in the summer, getting the hike started in the early morning will help you beat the heat.

When is the best time to visit Ravello

The best time to visit Ravello is during spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). These seasons have mild weather (around 68°F/20°C) and vibrant landscapes, perfect for hiking in the forests and along seaside cliffs.

Summer (July to August) is the most popular time to visit, but it does come with high temperatures (around 82°F/28°C). It also coincides with the Ravello Festival (Wagner Festival). For lovers of jazz, art, dance shows, and orchestras, this is an excellent time to see romantic classical performances with the backdrop of the sea.
