Overview: car trip from Praiano to Naples

The Amalfi coast is among the most famous vacation destinations for those seeking luxurious beaches, charming towns, and amazing Italian cuisine. The drive from Praiano to Naples will take you across the beautiful Sorrentine Peninsula and along the Bay of Naples. This short distance of 44 miles (70 km) is chock full of some of the oldest archeological sites in European history.

You’ll travel along the SS163 highway to Sorrento, then onto the SS145 highway. The small Italian villages will pass by your window, and the cliffs are dotted with churches and palaces overlooking the sea. This highway will take you around the Bay of Naples, where you can see boats docked on the shore and in the sea. Once you’re on the A3 highway, it is a straight shot back to Naples. But why go straight back when you can stop to soak up even more Italian history and culture (and food and wine)? See the vestiges of ancient Rome at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Stretch your legs hiking Mt. Vesuvius, or enjoy lunch at Cantina del Vesuvio. When you ride with Daytrip, you can have a full-day experience before you get back to Naples!

About Naples

Naples is one of the oldest trading posts and cities in history, going as far back as the 8th century BCE. It is located in southern Italy and was founded by the Greeks according to ancient written records. Much of its cultural impact came from its role as a gateway between seafaring traders and land merchants. Even today, you’ll notice that many of the ferries that travel across the Tyrrhenian Sea start from Naples. Besides ancient sea routes, you’ll find the land routes are just as old, like the roads taking you from Praiano to Naples.

Millions visit Naples each year for its authentic Italian feel. This chaotic city has just enough grit to give you the experience of living in a real city instead of a tourist destination. That's not to say it's not worth a visit. In fact, Naples' historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with stupendous churches and palaces from its heyday. Naples is also a popular launching point for excursions to the Mediterranean islands off of the coast. Its close proximity to ancient archeological sites like Pompeii and the Amalfi coast makes it a natural last stop before getting on your flight home via the NAP airport.

From Praiano to Naples: travel tips

Keep these tips in mind to make your trip from Praiano to Naples go off without a hitch.

Keep your belongings close by

Italy has a very low violent crime rate, but pickpocketing is common. Don’t become a victim! Keep your phone and wallet out of your back pocket and don’t carry large amounts of cash. Instead, pick a bag with zippers and keep it close to you.

### Give yourself plenty of time No one wants to feel like they’re going to miss their flight! If you are traveling to the NAP airport, give yourself plenty of time for possible delays, especially when traveling by bus or train. Airlines tend to suggest getting to the airport two hours before your flight but check the specific recommendations for your trip based on the time of year and possible airport construction. If you are traveling with children or a lot of luggage, account for this as well.

If you are going directly to the NAP airport, take the Curreri Viaggi shuttle bus for $11 (10 euros) and you are required to buy a ticket ahead of time. ### Praiano to Naples by train Praiano doesn’t have a train station, but you can take a bus or taxi to Sorrento, and from Sorrento, you can take the train to Naples. It's worth the extra cost, especially because these tickets can be bought in advance. ### Praiano to Naples by ferry You can’t take a ferry straight from Praiano, but if you get to Sorrento by bus or taxi, you can take the ferry to Naples. The schedule changes depending on the season, so check everything beforehand!

Things to do when you get to Naples

Naples is Italy’s third-largest city and always has something to do! After your drive from Praiano to Naples, go out on the town for these great activities:

### Visit the National Archaeological Museum If you didn’t get a chance to see Pompeii and Herculaneum, come to the National Archeological Museum for its large collection of artifacts from the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. You can also see Greco-Roman remains of civilizations, mosaics, sculptures, and even the Farnese Bull. If you are visiting in the summer, book your tickets ahead of time to save on waiting in line. ### Go underground at Underground Naples As one of the world’s oldest cities, Naples is built on its own remains. Head to the Naples underground to see thousands of years of artifacts in its many catacombs and tunnels. This cool getaway is perfect for hot summer days. The Catacombs of San Gennaro are particularly popular and worth the trip. Book your tickets ahead of time to ensure you’ll get a spot, especially in the summer. ### Journey to the islands If you haven’t had enough of the ocean yet, take one of Naples’ many ferries to the islands of Procida, Capri, and Ischia. Each island has its own unique draw and the ferries are frequent and fast! They are a short distance from the mainland, so you can still be back in time for dinner.

When is the best time to visit Naples

Naples is most popular during the summer. Between June and August, you’ll have the most options for entertainment and transportation, but it is more crowded and expensive. The sun can be quite intense, and the urban heat island effect means the city will feel warmer than on the shore.

For milder weather, cheaper accommodation, and smaller crowds, try to time your visit for spring or fall. If you plan on doing any hiking during your trip, it is best to visit during these shoulder seasons.
