Overview: car trip from Marseille to Avignon
The drive from Marseille to Avignon will take you 65 miles (105 km) inland across the Provence region. Avignon is nearly entirely surrounded by protected national forests and the stunning landscapes of the Provence countryside, which is known for its lavender fields, vineyards, and quaint villages.
The A7 highway directly connects Marseille and Avignon with little need to change course, but instead of rushing to your destination, take detours to the little nooks and crannies of the French countryside. You will need a car to do most of this, as southern France does not have frequent public transportation to the smaller towns and castles.
One must-see for your drive is Les Baux. Cave dwellings aren’t usually what comes to mind when we think of southern France, but that’s exactly what you’ll find here!
The total driving time is 1 hour and 10 minutes without any detours or sightseeing stops (but you will definitely want to book a few!) After your mini road trip through Provence, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Avignon!
About Avignon
Avignon is located in the Provence region of southern France, and its most prominent landmark is the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). In the 14th century, Avignon became the seat of the papacy, a period during which the city flourished as a center for religious culture. The palace's imposing Gothic architecture is a major draw, and the city receives about four million visitors annually from near and far.
The city’s old town is enclosed by well-preserved medieval walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its narrow cobblestone streets and charming squares, such as Place de l'Horloge, have historical buildings and outdoor cafes. The famous bridge Pont Saint-Bénézet, or Pont d'Avignon, partly spans the Rhône River and is a historic relic that has inspired songs and legends.
The city’s location along the Rhone River helped develop its inland trade, as goods and ideas moved up and down the river. Today, it offers romantic scenery and cool breezes in the summer.
But Avignon isn’t just a city dedicated to the past- it also has a modern cultural scene! Avignon’s most well-known annual event is the Festival d'Avignon, held every July. This festival is one of the most important contemporary performing arts events in the world, attracting artists and audiences globally for its eclectic mix of theater, dance, and music.

Legend says that a shepherd, Benezet, had a vision in which angels told him to construct a bridge on that site.
The bridge’s construction was said to cause many miraculous healings, and Benezet became the patron saint of bridge builders.

He delivered us straight to our porters on the Viking cruise dock in Avignon. Thank you for making this a perfect transfer from Marseilles to Avignon."

"Regarding our trip from Marseille to Avignon on October 9, 2022, our driver Guy was great. He arrived promptly and waited patiently for us while we got organized. He was not able to park in front of the hotel, but he parked across the street, and made several trips to help us with our luggage. His van was large enough for everything, including a wheelchair, and comfortable for five of us.
We had planned to spend a day in Marseille, but our flight arrived late, and we did not get to our hotel until late at night. We were so disappointed. Guy drove us around Marseille so that we can see the port and the view of the city from the Basilique.
All in all, we received excellent service!

"The trip, with a side-trip to Aix-en-Provence was perfect. The car was comfortable and clean and Edward provided water and tissues - everything for our comfort. He is an excellent driver and was extremely knowledgeable, courteous and considerate. He’s also very personable. When he dropped us at our final destination at the ship in Avignon, he went onto the ship first to make sure we could check in and then carried our luggage in. We felt Edward went out of his way for us. I highly recommend him. "

"The driver was very nice and arrived on time. I was a little hesitant to try Daytrip since I had not heard of it, but your reviews online were very good. It was definitely much better than trying to haul my luggage through two train stations and dealing with two taxis. I especially appreciated receiving an email with the details of my driver. I have already recommended your service to other people.
