  • Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (1010–1029) is the second largest church in Georgia and the most important — built over the site where Christ's robe is said to be buried, its interior preserves extraordinary medieval frescoes and the tombs of Georgian kings across fifteen centuries of royal burial

Main attractions

  • The view from the monastery terrace is among the most celebrated in the Caucasus — the river confluence directly below, Mtskheta's Svetitskhoveli Cathedral visible in the town across the water, and the Caucasus foothills extending north toward the Greater Range on clear days
  • The interior preserves the original 6th-century stone cross (jvari means cross in Georgian) around which the church was built — a place of active pilgrimage and continuous worship for over 1,400 years

Take note

Know more about your day trip

Mtskheta lies about 12 miles (20 km) north of Tbilisi, with a drive of roughly 25 to 30 minutes. Jvari Monastery sits on the cliff above Mtskheta, reached by a winding mountain road that adds another 15 minutes from the town. The proximity of both UNESCO sites makes this one of the most accessible and rewarding short day trips from the Georgian capital.
Mtskheta has excellent traditional Georgian restaurants, especially along the lanes near the cathedral. Try khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread that varies by region, and khinkali, the famous twisted soup dumplings filled with spiced meat or mushrooms. Pair them with Georgian wines from the Kakheti region, since Georgia is widely considered the cradle of winemaking. Many small wine cellars in town offer tastings of qvevri-fermented wines.
Svetitskhoveli is built over the site where Christ's robe is said to be buried, according to Georgian Christian tradition. The interior preserves extraordinary medieval frescoes and the tombs of Georgian kings spanning fifteen centuries of royal burial. The cathedral remains an active place of worship and serves as the seat of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. Its architectural and historical significance makes it the country's most revered religious building.
Modest dress is required at all religious sites in Mtskheta and Jvari Monastery. Shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women, and women are expected to cover their heads with a scarf inside the cathedral. Headscarves are usually available at the entrance for those without their own. Photography is generally allowed in courtyards but may be restricted inside, so check posted signs and respect ongoing services.
The view from Jvari's terrace is among the most celebrated in the Caucasus. You can see the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers meeting directly below, with Mtskheta's Svetitskhoveli Cathedral visible across the water. On clear days, the Caucasus foothills extend north toward the Greater Range. The road to the summit is paved but steep and narrow, so having someone else handle the drive lets you focus on the panorama.
Spring through early fall offers the most pleasant conditions, with mild weather and clear views of the Caucasus from Jvari Monastery. Summer can be hot in the river valley, so morning visits work best. Fall brings beautiful colors to the surrounding hills. Winter visits are atmospheric, with occasional snow on the mountains, but the road to Jvari can become slippery, so weather conditions should be checked beforehand.
Jvari is a 6th-century Georgian Orthodox church whose cross-dome design established the template for Georgian church building for the following millennium. Perched on a rocky summit above the river confluence, it is one of the oldest and most perfectly preserved examples of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. The interior preserves the original 6th-century stone cross around which the church was built. Pilgrimage and continuous worship have continued here for over 1,400 years.
Mtskheta is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kartli and the spiritual heart of Georgian Orthodox Christianity. Located at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, the small town's UNESCO-listed monuments preserve the earliest and most sacred layer of Georgian religious culture. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, built between 1010 and 1029, is the second largest church in Georgia and the country's most important religious site.
