Main attractions

  • A Jordanian market town of Byzantine and Umayyad heritage, best known for the 6th-century Madaba Mosaic Map — the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George; a detailed topographic map of the Middle East from the Nile Delta to Lebanon rendered in 2.3 million tesserae, with Jerusalem at its center
  • The Archaeological Park preserves additional Byzantine mosaic floors of exceptional quality — the Hippolytus Hall mosaic and the Church of the Virgin both contain figurative and geometric work rivaling the finest in the region

What to eat

  • Mansaf — Jordan's national dish of lamb cooked in fermented dried yogurt sauce served over rice and flatbread — at any of the traditional restaurants in the town center; Haret Jdoudna in a restored Ottoman courtyard house is the most atmospheric option

Main attractions

  • The mountain from which Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land before his death — a ridge above the Dead Sea valley in western Jordan at 817 meters, with a panoramic view across the Jordan River, the Dead Sea, Jericho, and on exceptionally clear days, the towers of Jerusalem visible on the horizon 50km distant
  • The Memorial Church of Moses on the summit preserves some of the finest Byzantine mosaic floors in the Middle East — the 6th-century hunting and pastoral scenes are exceptional; the famous Brazen Serpent sculpture by Giovanni Fantoni marks the traditional site of Moses' viewpoint on the terrace outside

Take note

  • The view is weather and visibility dependent — morning visits before haze builds give the best chance of seeing Jerusalem; the church and mosaics are worth visiting regardless of visibility conditions
  • Mount Nebo is generally open daily from 8:00 AM, with closing times varying by season (earlier in winter, later in summer).

Know more about your day trip

Yes, beyond the famous mosaic map, Madaba's Archaeological Park preserves additional Byzantine mosaic floors of exceptional quality. The Hippolytus Hall mosaic and the Church of the Virgin both feature remarkable figurative and geometric work that rivals the finest in the region. The Memorial Church of Moses on Mount Nebo also contains extraordinary 6th-century mosaics depicting hunting and pastoral scenes, considered among the finest in the Middle East.
Madaba is about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Amman, with a drive of roughly 40 minutes. From Madaba, Mount Nebo lies just 6 miles (10 km) further west, taking about 15 minutes through olive groves and rolling hills. The proximity of both sites makes this one of the most relaxed day trips from the Jordanian capital.
Mount Nebo is reasonably accessible compared to many Jordanian heritage sites. The main viewing terrace and Memorial Church of Moses are reached via paved paths from the parking area, with relatively gentle gradients. Some sections of the church floor and surrounding archaeological remains involve uneven surfaces. Wheelchair users can manage the main viewpoint and church entry, though companion assistance may be helpful at certain points along the route.
Madaba is an excellent place to try mansaf, Jordan's national dish of lamb cooked in fermented dried yogurt sauce served over rice and flatbread. Haret Jdoudna, set in a restored Ottoman courtyard house, is the most atmospheric option in town. You'll also find excellent mezze, including hummus, mutabal, and fresh-baked Arabic flatbread. The town has a notable Christian heritage, so non-halal options are sometimes available.
Mount Nebo is the mountain from which Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land before his death, according to the Book of Deuteronomy. At an elevation of 2,680 feet (817 meters), the ridge above the Dead Sea valley offers a panoramic view across the Jordan River, the Dead Sea, and Jericho. On clear days, even the towers of Jerusalem are visible. It's a major pilgrimage site for Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
Modest clothing is essential at the religious sites, with shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. A light scarf for women is appreciated when entering churches. Comfortable walking shoes work best for the church floors and Mount Nebo's terraced grounds. Layered clothing helps with shifting conditions, since Mount Nebo's elevated position can feel cooler and breezier than Madaba's town center.
Morning visits, especially before haze builds during midday, give the best chance of seeing as far as Jerusalem on the western horizon. Spring and fall offer the most reliable visibility, while summer can bring dusty conditions that limit long-distance views. Winter visits sometimes reveal the clearest air after rain washes the atmosphere clean. Regardless of conditions, the church and Byzantine mosaics remain compelling year-round.
Preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George, the 6th-century Madaba Mosaic Map is the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the Holy Land. It shows the Middle East from the Nile Delta to Lebanon, rendered in approximately 2.3 million tesserae with Jerusalem at its center. The map provides invaluable historical information about Byzantine geography and remains a remarkable example of early Christian artistic and cartographic achievement.
