You will receive the vehicle that best fits the number of travelers in your group, ranging from a sedan to a van for groups of up to 7. Depending where you travel, you can book anything from a sedan comparable to a Toyota Corolla to a Mercedes V-Class to a Classic Cuban Car. While the exact model may vary, we always ensure that the vehicle provided meets your needs in terms of safety, reliability, and comfort. You may be upgraded to a larger vehicle class free of charge depending on availability. Since our largest vehicle seats 7, for groups larger a combination of vehicles will be used. We will send you the exact vehicle details a few days before your trip.
Everywhere except the USA, drivers will supply appropriate child seats (just let us know during booking). In the USA, certain states require you to supply your own child seats.
Know more about traveling from Phonsavan
Phonsavan sits in the mountains of central Laos, roughly 230 km (143 miles) from Vang Vieng and around 260 km (162 miles) from Luang Prabang by road. The drives take approximately 4 to 5 hours depending on the route and conditions, winding through highland terrain and mountain passes that are scenic in their own right. The roads require a confident driver familiar with the route β this is not a journey well-suited to navigating independently, especially for first-time visitors to the region. Having a dedicated driver means you can take in the views rather than focus on the road.
A full day is ideal. The main Plain of Jars sites β particularly Site 1, Site 2, and Site 3 β are spread across the region and each offers a distinct setting, from open hillside meadows to forested ridges. Visiting two or three sites comfortably, including time to walk the marked paths and take in the landscape, takes around half a day. Adding a stop at the UXO centre or the local market fills out a well-rounded day without feeling rushed. If you are travelling from Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang, factor in driving time when planning your day.
Yes β the designated visitor sites are safe. The sites open to tourists have been cleared and certified by demining organisations, and paths are clearly marked. As with any UXO-affected area, the standard and important rule is to stay on marked trails and do not pick up or touch unfamiliar objects off the path. This is not a reason to avoid the area; it is simply part of visiting responsibly. The experience of walking among the jars is peaceful and fascinating, and guides and local staff are well-versed in helping visitors navigate safely.
Phonsavan is best known as the gateway to the Plain of Jars, one of Southeast Asia's most enigmatic archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage area. Thousands of ancient stone jars β some weighing several tonnes β are scattered across the plateau in clusters, and no one knows with certainty who made them or why. Beyond the jars, the surrounding landscape tells a sobering story: Xieng Khouang Province was one of the most heavily bombed regions in history during the Vietnam War era, and the MAG (Mines Advisory Group) UXO Visitor Centre in town offers a powerful and important look at that legacy. The local market and Phonsavan town itself give a glimpse into everyday highland Lao life, and the rolling hills and open plateau scenery are unlike anything else in Laos.
Few places in Southeast Asia offer this combination: a genuinely mysterious archaeological site, a historically significant landscape, and an off-the-beaten-track atmosphere that feels far removed from tourist crowds. The Plain of Jars is not widely understood even by archaeologists β the leading theories about the jars' origins span funerary practices to ancient trade route stopovers β which gives the site a rare quality of open-ended wonder. Visitors who make the effort to get here consistently describe it as one of the most memorable stops in Laos. The journey through mountain highlands is itself a highlight, and arriving by private transfer means you experience it as a seamless, comfortable excursion rather than a logistical ordeal.
Public transport options to Phonsavan are limited and slow, often involving long waits, multiple changes, or overnight bus journeys that eat into your travel time. A private transfer gets you there directly, on your schedule, with your luggage handled and no shared stops. More importantly, it gives you flexibility on arrival β you can decide how long to spend at each jar site, make spontaneous stops along the route, and leave when you are ready rather than catching the last bus. For a destination this remote, that flexibility makes a genuine difference to the quality of your day.
