No one quite knows how the Wild Horses of Aus On took up residents in the desert plains of Namibia. Some say they’re the descendants of German Imperial Army cavalry horses, while others believe their forebears were shipwrecked on their way to Australia. Another theory is that they’re descended from the stud stock of Duwisib Castle. Government plans to capture the horses have been met with strong local opposition, so for now, they’re still free to roam. Scientists have been captivated by the horses’ adaptation to their harsh environment - they can go days without drinking and conserve water better than your typical horse. There’s a chance you’ll see them galloping by the road as you’re driving, but for the best chance to see these majestic beasts, there’s a blind near their watering hole.
