Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest

A place once used for ritual and worship, these ancient trees are revered for providing medicinal and spiritual healing.

About

The Kaya Kinondo forest on the southern coast of Kenya, by the Indian Ocean, was home to the Digo people after they fled Somalia in the late 1500’s. Each home had a place of prayer known as a “fingo”; a place filled with magical objects to protect the Digo people from harm’s way. Whilst they no longer reside in the depths of the forest but rather the surrounding villages, Kaya Kinodo forest remains a place of spirituality and worship and is visited by the indigenous people and tourists alike. The Digo community would connect with ancestral spirits, perform ritualistic ceremonies and use the trees and plants for their medicinal properties. Like stepping into an enchanted forest, Kaya Kinondo is filled with crooked trees, branches entangled like vines wrapped around the trunks, which visitors are invited to embrace to rid them of their worries and fears. Let go of what ails you in this mystical woodland!
