Algeria
Fort of Santa Cruz
Take in panoramic views of Oran from this historic hilltop fortress.
About
Built by the Spanish in the 16th century, the Fort of Santa Cruz is one of three bastions guarding Oran, Algeriaâs second largest port. At an elevation of 400 meters, the Fort of Santa Cruz and its sister citadels proved invaluable - they successfully defended the city until 1831 when it finally fell to the French. Following a cholera epidemic in 1847, the French erected the small Chapel of Santa Cruz next to the fort. Today, the Fort of Santa Cruzâ main attraction remains its strategic position. From its hilltop perch, youâre treated to fantastic panoramic views of the port of Oran, while immersed in the fortâs historic atmosphere.
