The New Forest isn't actually new; it's nearly 1,000 years old. Wild ponies wander freely here, just as they have since medieval times.
You'll drive through landscapes that look almost untouched. Open heathland where ponies, cattle, and pigs roam as "Commoners' Rights" allow locals to graze animals just like their ancestors did. Stop in Lyndhurst, the forest's unofficial capital, to understand how this unique system works. The Rhinefield Ornamental Drive offers some of England's tallest trees. Towering redwoods and Douglas firs were planted in Victorian times. Burley village keeps old forest traditions alive, while Brockenhurst gives you classic forest views. Watch for the famous ponies, but keep your distance. They're wild animals living free in their ancient home.

Beaulieu brings together 800 years of history, from medieval monks to modern motors, all beside the gentle Beaulieu River.
Start with the National Motor Museum. It's one of the world's best car collections, from the earliest motor cars to Formula 1 racers. The museum sits in the grounds of a 13th-century Cistercian abbey, and you can still walk through the atmospheric ruins where monks once lived. Palace House, built into the abbey's gatehouse, shows how the Montagu family has lived here for generations. Don't miss Buckler's Hard nearby. This tiny village built Nelson's ships from New Forest oak. The whole area feels peaceful, with the river winding through it all and forest ponies sometimes wandering right up to the buildings
Daytrip is loved all around the world. Here's why.
