Daytrip is loved all around the world. Here's why.
Taormina is approximately 155 miles (250 km) east of Palermo. The drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on traffic. This is a full-day commitment but the journey across the Sicilian interior is visually rewarding in its own right, passing through mountain landscapes and the foothills of Mount Etna.
Absolutely. Cefalu is one of Sicily's most appealing towns in its own right. The Norman Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture with extraordinary Byzantine mosaics. The medieval alleyways, harbor, and the climb up La Rocca to ancient Greek temple ruins all make Cefalu a destination worth visiting, regardless of its television connection.
The hotel used in the show is the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace in Taormina. It is an active luxury hotel, and non-guests cannot access the interior, but the facade and the surrounding piazza can be viewed and photographed freely from outside. The building's exterior and the dramatic views from the nearby terrace area are well worth seeing even without entering.
Taormina has exceptional standalone attractions, including its ancient Greek Theater with views over Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, the charming boutique-lined Corso Umberto, the baroque churches along the main street, and the cable car down to Isola Bella beach. The town is one of Sicily's most picturesque destinations and rewards exploration well beyond the filming locations alone.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant seasons, with warm and comfortable weather ideal for exploring both towns on foot. Summer is popular but very hot in Taormina and Cefalu, and both become crowded with visitors. For those motivated by the filming locations, visiting during quieter shoulder seasons allows for more atmospheric photography and a more relaxed experience.
Both Cefalu and Taormina involve significant walking on uneven cobblestone streets, so comfortable, sturdy footwear is essential. Taormina's hilltop position means it can be slightly cooler than the coast, so carrying a light layer is sensible. Sun protection, a water bottle, and a good camera are all recommended. To enter Cefalu's cathedral, shoulders and knees must be covered.
The majority of the show's drama in Taormina was set in and around the San Domenico Palace hotel, a stunning converted 15th-century monastery perched on a clifftop above the Ionian Sea. The ancient Greek Theater, Isola Bella, Corso Umberto, and various terraces and streets throughout the hilltop town also featured prominently as filming locations throughout Season 2.
Cefalu is the location of the dramatic opening scene of The White Lotus Season 2, filmed on the town's famous beach beneath La Rocca cliffs. The town's Norman cathedral and seafront also appear in several key scenes throughout the season. The beach, cathedral piazza, and harbor area are all easily accessible on foot from the town center.
