The capital of of Castile and León didn’t rise to prominence until 1072, when Count Pedro Ansúrez built a palace, and two churches here. Afterwards, it skyrocketed in size and stature, becoming the venue King Fernando and Queen Isabel’s wedding, and hosting Magellan, Christopher Colombus, and Miguel de Cervantes, the latter two having house-museums in the city today. The unfinished Cathedral would have been the largest church in Europe, but after resources ran dry, it’s only half its intended size. The structure exhibits several architectural styles, a magnificent reredos from 1562, and houses the impressive Diocesan Museum. The esteemed University’s Baroque façade is decorated with various academic symbols, while the Santa Cruz College is one of Spain’s finest Renaissance structure, and houses a valuable library.

With a diameter of 40 meters, Cenote Yokdzonot is one of the largest in the Yucatan. Surrounded by lush jungle, the roots of ancient trees hang over the 18-meter-high walls of this “open” cenote, creating a waterfall of wood. Unlike many cenotes, the area around Yokdzonot hasn’t been built up. Rather, two women from the local community laid each stone in the walking path and cut the wooden railings by hand to preserve the site’s natural beauty. They only buildings here are the palapa-roofed bathrooms and a small restaurant cooking traditional local food. As usual with cenotes, don’t use sunblock or bug repellent before getting in the water!
