Arrive in Salisbury, a cathedral city where medieval spires pierce the skyline and stone streets whisper tales of ancient England. The magnificent Salisbury Cathedral houses one of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta, the 1215 document that shaped democracy itself. This UNESCO Memory of the World treasure sits within a building boasting Britain's tallest spire at 404 feet and the world's oldest working mechanical clock, ticking since 1386. The cathedral's soaring Gothic architecture has captivated filmmakers for decades—its cloisters appeared in 2005's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the building featured prominently in The Hollow Crown BBC series. Wander through the Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain, where 13th-century walls enclose elegant Georgian houses and pristine lawns. The medieval city center offers timber-framed buildings, bustling markets unchanged since 1227, and riverside views along the Avon where John Constable painted his famous cathedral studies.

Explore the world's largest prehistoric stone circle, where massive standing stones dwarf Stonehenge. Walk freely among 5,000-year-old megaliths, wander through the charming village nestled within the henge, visit the Alexander Keiller Museum, and climb Silbury Hill—Europe's tallest prehistoric mound—for sweeping Wiltshire countryside views.

Know more about your day trip

Stonehenge is located near Salisbury, roughly 9 miles (14 km) north of the city, and is sometimes added as an additional stop. However, combining all three sites in one day is a very full schedule. If Stonehenge is a priority for you, consider a custom day trip instead.
Salisbury is about 83 miles (134 km) southwest of London, roughly a 1-hour 40-minute drive. Avebury is approximately 90 miles (145 km) from London, around a 1 hour 50 minute drive. Your private driver handles all routing between both stops, making the journey between the two sites seamless and stress-free.
The ground around the Avebury stone circle is mostly level grass, making it reasonably accessible for most visitors, though the terrain is uneven in places. The village itself has level pathways. The Alexander Keiller Museum has accessible facilities. Salisbury Cathedral has full wheelchair access to most areas. Comfortable flat shoes are recommended for both sites.
Walking freely around the Avebury stone circle and henge is free of charge, as the site is managed by the National Trust and open to the public. However, the Alexander Keiller Museum inside the village, which holds artifacts from the site, does charge for entry. Parking and some facilities within the village may also have associated costs.
Most visitors head to Salisbury first, spending the morning exploring the cathedral and city center before continuing to Avebury in the afternoon. This approach makes good logistical sense and allows you to enjoy the quieter Avebury landscape in softer afternoon light. Your driver manages the timing between both stops to make the most of your day.
While Stonehenge is the more famous monument, Avebury's stone circle is actually the largest in the world, enclosing a whole village within its henge. The stones at Avebury are more accessible since you can walk freely among them, and the site also includes Silbury Hill, the tallest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe. Avebury offers a less crowded, more immersive prehistoric experience.
Salisbury Cathedral houses one of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta, signed in 1215. The cathedral also boasts Britain's tallest spire at 404 feet and contains the world's oldest working mechanical clock, which has been ticking since 1386. The Cathedral Close, the largest in England, is itself worth exploring at a leisurely pace.
Both Salisbury and Avebury are in Wiltshire, where the weather is typically mild but changeable year-round. Rain can arrive at any time, so a waterproof layer is always worth having, especially for outdoor time at Avebury. Spring and summer offer the most reliable conditions, while early autumn can be particularly atmospheric around the ancient stones.
