Main attractions

  • Rome's westernmost major city — a remarkably intact Roman settlement in the foothills of the Zerhoun massif in northern Morocco, occupied from the 3rd century BC through to the 11th century AD and partially excavated to reveal triumphal arch, basilica, capitol and some of the finest in-situ mosaic floors surviving anywhere in the Roman world
  • The House of Orpheus, House of the Acrobat and House of Venus preserve vivid figurative mosaics — dolphins, mythological scenes and the Orpheus mosaic — in their original positions within the excavated room layouts

Take note

  • The site is fully exposed with no shade — visit early and bring water and sun protection

Know more about your day trip

Yes, this is what makes Volubilis particularly remarkable. The mosaics in the House of Orpheus, House of the Acrobat, and House of Venus remain in their original positions within the excavated room layouts. You'll see vivid figurative scenes including dolphins, mythological subjects, and the famous Orpheus mosaic. Walking among them gives you a far stronger sense of Roman daily life than viewing displaced fragments in a museum could.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, one of Morocco's holiest towns, sits just a few miles from Volubilis and makes a natural extension if you have extra time. Built in dramatic terraced fashion on twin hills, the town is the burial place of Moulay Idriss I, founder of the first Moroccan dynasty. Non-Muslims cannot enter the central mausoleum but can enjoy the panoramic views and traditional atmosphere of the medina.
Volubilis is about 50 miles (80 km) west of Fez, with a typical drive time of around 1 hour. The route passes through rolling olive groves and farmland in the Saiss plain, with the Zerhoun massif rising dramatically on the approach. The smooth highway makes the journey straightforward, and the scenery itself is one of the quiet highlights of the day.
Yes, Volubilis is generally child-friendly, with open paths through the ruins that allow kids to explore freely. The site is fascinating for older children interested in history, especially with the well-preserved mosaics and toppled columns. However, the lack of shade and limited facilities means families should plan for short visits with plenty of water and sun protection. Strollers are difficult on the uneven ancient surfaces, so a baby carrier works better.
The nearby town of Moulay Idriss and the larger city of Meknes offer excellent traditional Moroccan dining. Try kefta tagine with seasonal vegetables, harira soup, or fresh-baked khobz bread served with local olive oil from the surrounding groves. Meknes is famous for olives and olive oil, so look for shops selling local products to take home. Mint tea is the customary way to end any meal in this region.
The site is fully exposed with no shade, so dress for sun protection regardless of the season. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and breathable clothing are essential. Bring at least one liter of water per person because facilities at the site are limited. Comfortable walking shoes with a good grip help on the uneven ancient stones. In cooler months, a light layer is useful for the early morning chill.
Spring and fall offer the most pleasant conditions, with mild temperatures and wildflowers carpeting the surrounding hills in March and April. Summer can be intensely hot at midday with no shade, so early morning or late afternoon visits are strongly recommended. Winter is generally mild but can bring rain. Sunrise and sunset cast warm light across the columns and ruins, ideal for photography enthusiasts.
Volubilis is one of the most intact Roman cities in North Africa and represents Rome's westernmost major settlement. Occupied from the 3rd century BC through the 11th century AD, the partially excavated site reveals a triumphal arch, basilica, capitol, and exceptional in-situ mosaic floors. It later played a role in the founding of the Moroccan state under Moulay Idriss I, giving it dual significance for both Roman and Islamic heritage.
